• Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

  To me, English-especially English Literature-is a mirror to society. It reflects the world as it truly is and also offers a window into imagination and hope. Literature allows us to confront reality and escape it at the same time, helping us understand both the world around us and the world within us.
  
  My interest in this field began with a powerful experience during my childhood. I once saw a patient struggling to communicate with a doctor simply because they didn't understand English. I stepped in to help, and that moment stayed with me. I realized how empowering language can be. Since then, I've felt a deep desire to educate others so they never feel helpless due to language barriers. Teaching English became not just a profession, but a purpose-to uplift, empower, and connect.

• What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach and why?

  My biggest inspiration has always been my parents and my paternal grandmother. My mother, due to a lack of support in English, was unable to clear her law entrance exams despite being a bright student. She came from a background of poverty and was the only one among her five sisters to reach Class 12. Unfortunately, that dream ended when she couldn't clear one subject-English. That unfulfilled dream created a silent void that I've always felt.
  
  My father lost his father at a very young age and couldn't even complete his schooling as he had to work to support the family. He never had the opportunity for higher education. I want to be the daughter who fulfils their dreams through my own achievements.
  
  My grandmother, who was married off at the age of six, never had the chance to hold a book. But she always said, "People may take everything from you-your property, your money-but they can never take away your education. That is your true wealth." Her words became the foundation of my purpose as a teacher.

• How does your work help society?

  Through my teaching, I try to bridge the gap that many, like my own family, once experienced. English today is a key to global communication, career advancement, and self-expression. By helping students gain proficiency in English, I'm not just preparing them for exams-I'm empowering them for life.
  
  My work helps build confidence in learners, allowing them to overcome social and professional barriers. If I can help even one person change the course of their life through education, I consider my work successful. I see every student I teach as part of a greater effort to build a more educated, self-reliant, and confident society.

• If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of and why?

  Apart from my parents-who remain my greatest source of inspiration-I deeply admire Muniba Mazari. Though known as a Pakistani activist, I believe her influence transcends nationality. She is a global symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.
  
  After a car accident left her paraplegic, she didn't let her disability define her. Instead, she redefined herself-becoming the first wheelchair-bound model in Pakistan, a motivational speaker, an artist, and a single mother. She taught the world that confidence and identity don't come from perfection, but from self-acceptance.
  
  One of her quotes that truly inspired me is: "Don't ask life for a lemonade when it gives you lemons-drink it as it is and be grateful." Her story reminds me that no matter what life throws at us, we always have the power to rise stronger.

• Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

  Outside of teaching, I am a passionate dancer. I have been trained in Bharatnatyam and Rabindra Nritya since the age of three, and both dance forms are a significant part of my life even today.
  
  Rabindra Nritya, created by Rabindranath Tagore, is deeply literary and lyrical-it feels like dancing poetry. Bharatnatyam, one of India's oldest classical dance forms, is rooted in storytelling and spiritual expression. Both styles are rich in symbolism, culture, and emotion. They connect me not just to art, but also to history, literature, and my inner self. Dance, for me, is a form of living literature.

• Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

  Yes, one story remains close to my heart. I was once asked to teach a Class 10 student just four days before his board exams. The syllabus was huge, and I was more anxious than the student himself! I started taking long sessions daily, driven by sheer determination.
  
  One day, during an online class, his mother suddenly joined. I braced myself for criticism, assuming she might question my pace or methods. Instead, she kindly said, "Ma'am, please don't worry. I know you joined late, and I trust you're doing your best." Her faith in me was both humbling and motivating.
  
  When the results were out, the student called me, thrilled-he had scored 96%! I was overjoyed but kept a straight face and jokingly asked, "Where did the other four marks go?" He shyly replied, "Ma'am, I was so excited that everything you taught came in the paper, I started writing in capital letters in the middle of sentences-and that's why I lost marks!" It was funny, heartwarming, and a reminder of how excitement and hard work can beautifully collide-even in the smallest of errors.
