About Stephanie

My name is Steph Dyck, I have lived in the Aylmer area my whole life. I grew up in an immigrant household, so growing up, there was always this internal pressure to work hard and do my best to succeed. This was because my parents didn't have the same opportunities when they were young, and I was trying to make them proud. This internalized pressure came with its own challenges, and it took me a long time to decide that an English BA is what I wanted to pursue.

I am very passionate about reading, writing, and helping people (I'm sorry if that sounds super cliché). This is what also led me to pursue a TESOL Certificate from York University concurrently with my BA: learning English is hard, both for English speakers in the school system, and newcomers to Canada. School is hard, and it's unfortunate that teachers don't always have the resources and support to meet individual needs in the classroom. My own brother dropped out of highschool to finish his GED online because there were conflicts in the classroom—his individual learning needs were not being met, and his grades/behavior paid for it. These experiences have very much informed my understanding of teaching, and my goal is always to reach the learner's goals/needs to the best of my ability.

A little more about myself: I enjoy travelling, hiking, going on walks with my dog, and recently discovered that water sports are my new favourite thing! (I also wanted to include reading, but that's pretty on the nose for an English major).

It's hard to describe my lessons, as they vary greatly depending on the student, but here are some general goals and techniques that I will incorporate:

- I try to tailor each lesson to individual learning styles and student needs.

- I incorporate different activities for more engagement and understanding.

- My goal isn't to teach, but to empower students in their own learning journey, and to guide them along the way with resources, suggestions, and examples.

- A typical lesson plan would probably include a debrief about the previous meeting's topic to see how the learner made out, a conversation about where the learner is hoping to go in the meeting, what kind of help they need, and then me using different materials and examples to help the learner meet that goal.

- If a learner does not have homework or anything specific they would like to work on in the session, I would have extra skill building activities prepared that we could work on.

- I have a TESOL Certificate, so my lessons can be tailored to both English speakers who need some extra attention and guidance, as well as those who are just learning English as another language.

-Ideally, the first meeting would be used as an assessment to see where the learner is at, what areas they need/want help in, where they are hoping to get with these tutoring sessions,. as well as some other basic questions. Ideally, the session would end with a basic skills test which I could use to plan future activities.
