About Elisabeth

I have been teaching for two years. During which I taught classes of 15 refugees at a time, which cycled every two months. I taught beginner, intermediate, and upper levels, of which 90% passed their exit exams, which tested standard English comprehension and conversation for daily use. Other students advanced to upper levels in order to study for their TOEFL certification.

Salut ! I am a recently graduated student, studying International Affairs and French at a university in Virginia, USA. During that time, I also taught English as a second language classes at a refugee resettlement center, and fell in love with teaching. I later earned my TEFL certification, and took on more classes, teaching groups as well as one-on-one tutoring. Because the language levels varied dramatically for each individual student in and between classes, I have developed experience in adapting my teaching approaches to individual language needs of all levels. This includes being able to work with both children and adults, while using audio, reading, writing, and oral practices that include/service topics tailored to the interest of the student.

I believe in methodology that incorporates grammar lessons within a thematic lesson. Students profit far better in an environment of free discourse between the student and teacher, and I welcome and maintain a student-centered tutoring environment, in which the individual has the opportunity to have input and guide the discussion. I equally believe in creating a general long-term structured lesson plan, that includes language objectives. This is a highly personalized process; therefore, I take the time to get to know my students’ interests and goals, and work together to create a plan before commencing courses.

Additionally, I do not believe in working on language skills by learning categories separately- eg- vocabulary, grammar, phonetics, writing form, etc. Instead, as I already mentioned, I have found that students respond better to an integrated, creative approach. For children, I use activities that incorporate kinesthetic approaches, such as verbal-physical response games and arts and crafts. My methods for reactive reading response combined with related audio and visual content have proved very effective as well.

Lastly, as an educator, I believe in acting as a learning mediator, where the student is capable of being involved in the learning process. I provide guided questions that create conversation and engage the student to demand questions as well.
