  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I was inspired to teach English after living in Morocco for a couple of years, where I also learnt the Arabic dialect, and modern stand written Arabic. I furthered my Arabic studies in Australia, and still learn this language today. I have visited Morocco several times to teach English, which inspired me to get my formal Education Degree.
I am a native, born and bred Australian, English language speaker. Living abroad, and gaining an interest in other languages inspired me to follow teaching English due to its high demand from non-English speakers
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I think Australia as a whole has so many emblems, ideals and cultural representatives that encompass English as a unique and exciting language to learn, especially as an Australian native speaker, we get the best of all the English-speaking benefits, like slang, and cultural diversity and equity within Australia.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

I love idioms and figures of speech, as it sums up how poetic and abstract the English Language is, especially Australian English.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

As a teacher, being understood, and understanding others is vital to express yourself. Being able to not only speak, but think in English, is an end goal that I see so many students benefit from.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Of all the domains, speaking is the most difficult, therefor, putting yourself out there, 'having a go' (Australian slang) is the only way to progress. Australians in particular love people embracing the language, even if it is not perfectly spoken! We understand and appreciate any way it is communicated.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In terms of teaching, hearing that 'Penny Drop', the moment of absolute understanding, where students say 'oh, I totally get it now!' is priceless.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

It's not only the travel that has inspired and helped me, but Australian has such a mix of diverse languages and cultures, including Indigenous, it is exciting to help anyone from interesting and liguistically diverse background.
