About Vanessa

I have tutored many students in the subjects of Mathematics, English, and Writing. I personally received very good grades in all these subjects throughout my school years. The personal skills that helped me to do well in my studies included being well organised, being consistent, and being focused on achieving my goals. These skills still benefit me as I continue to learn as an adult. Positive encouragement from others has also been a very important element of my success as a student. Because I have been encouraged by others in my educational endeavors, I would love to pay it forward and help someone else to achieve their goals.
Because you are willing to accept the help of a tutor, I know you are the kind of student who desires to make the most of this very important opportunity of your life - gaining a good education. This opportunity does not last forever; so I commend you for trying to make the most of this valuable time in your life. But as in all endeavors, support from others (e.g. parents, teachers, and friends) can really make a difference as to whether or not a student will succeed. Support teams are very important. I would love to be a part of your support team.

About the lesson

I can help beginning readers develop skills in English literacy; whether they are children or adults. It is very important for beginning readers to understand the phonetical concepts involved. If they understand how words are built and can break them down into understandable segments, even unfamiliar words can be read with confidence. In addition to being able to read words individually, I try to help new readers develop a natural and confident reading style, connecting words and ideas fluently. During tutoring sessions, this involves time spent reading out loud together - this way the student learns through personal practice and by my example. Learning to enjoy reading is very important. So I don't rush development; rather I focus on each concept until it is well understood. Then the student will make good progress, with a strong foundation.
