About Arlene
Hello! My name is Arlene Sumabong, and I am a Licensed Professional Teacher (LPT) from the Philippines, specialising in English. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, Major in English, and I am currently completing my Master's in Education with the same specialisation, so my teaching is grounded in both formal training and continuous professional development.
Over the past seven years, I have taught English across primary, secondary, and college levels, in public and private school settings as well as private tutoring. My experience includes full lesson planning, examination and assessment design, and academic coordination, giving me a well-rounded understanding of how students learn and progress at every stage. I hold a C2 Proficient EF SET English Certificate (74/100), reflecting strong command across reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
I approach every lesson with patience, structure, and genuine enthusiasm, adapting my methods to each student's age, level, and goals, whether that means building foundational literacy with a young learner or refining advanced writing and communication skills with an adult student. My aim is always to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and confident in their progress.
I look forward to working with you and supporting your journey toward greater fluency and confidence in English.

My Teaching Method & Techniques
I use a communicative, student-centered approach that balances the core pillars of English: grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Rather than teaching rules in isolation, I connect them to real use — students practice grammar through speaking and writing tasks, build vocabulary through context, and strengthen comprehension through guided reading and discussion. I rely heavily on interactive activities, scaffolded practice (moving from guided to independent work), and continuous, low-pressure assessment so I can adjust pacing and spot gaps early. I also incorporate digital tools and online learning platforms where useful, since much of my recent teaching has involved blended instruction.
A Typical Lesson
A typical session opens with a short warm-up or review of the previous lesson, followed by introducing the day's focus (a grammar point, reading passage, or skill). I model the concept, then move students into guided practice with feedback, and finally independent or communicative practice — such as a short writing task, dialogue, or exercise — to reinforce what was learned. I close with a quick recap and, when relevant, a small assessment or homework tied directly to the objective, so progress is easy to track.
What Sets Me Apart
I bring over seven years of real classroom experience across primary, secondary, and college levels — not just tutoring, but full lesson planning, exam and assessment design, and academic coordination. That range means I can diagnose exactly where a student is struggling and adjust my teaching style rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. I'm a Licensed Professional Teacher (LPT) with a degree specifically in English education, and I hold a C2 Proficient EF SET certificate (74/100), so students are learning from someone with both strong subject mastery and formal teaching training. I also bring patience and genuine enthusiasm, which especially matters with younger or less confident learners.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons suit a wide range of learners: young children (I've taught ages as young as primary/elementary level), secondary students preparing for exams or building core skills, and college-level or adult learners working on more advanced writing, comprehension, or communication. I've taught in classroom, small-group, and one-on-one tutoring settings, so I can adapt whether the goal is foundational literacy, exam readiness, or general fluency and confidence in English.
