About Chris

I've taught English for the past nine years, both at the university level (University of Texas, Williams College) and high school level (Kirby Hall School in Austin, TX). I hold a PhD in English from the University of Texas. I'm a highly trained test prep tutor (eight years), and have coached over a hundred students to their target score on the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I've worked in college admissions as well. In other words, I understand the demands of academic writing from a number of vantages: the challenges of reading and writing in high school, the skills students need to demonstrate during the college application process, the increased expectations for college students, the stresses of graduate school writing projects, and, most importantly, the strategies students can learn to best prepare themselves for present and future reading and writing success.

About the lesson

Although I have a laid back personality, I excel at quickly learning the strengths and learning styles of my students and aim to design our lessons to be productive and fun, rather than stressful. While I have learned to be an effective educator in a variety of settings (both inside and outside the classroom), I have come to realize that I am at my best when guiding motivated people who readily welcome intellectual challenges and also demand accountability and a clear sense of purpose from their education. My experience teaching at a large public university and elite liberal arts college affords me a unique ability to prepare younger students for the rigors of university study with a precise knowledge of the expectations and challenges they will face. For college and graduate students, I can offer an intimate familiarity with professor expectations and also help you create study habits to ensure success within your larger program/degree structure. The individualized attention of one-on-one sessions plays to my strength of helping students find their own unique path to self-discovery through reading and writing. Lastly, I offer a genuine love for teaching and, with that, a commitment to be an enthusiastic and reliable mentor.
