About Scott
I'm a technical writer who has worked in the oil and gas, electrical power, and information technology (IT) industries. I used to work in the civil engineering field, so I do some consulting for that profession too. I'm originally from Texas. I have 2 bachelor's degrees (government and journalism) and 2 master's degrees. I love reading and learning about history, science, music, etc. I'm passionate about teaching people to empower themselves, to teach people how to teach themselves and love the learning process. I love good music, whether it's classical, blues, rock, country, jazz, funk, R&B, etc. I play guitar and have 9 guitars at home. I don't sing, though. I enjoy traveling. I'm a "mountain person," though I like the beach too. I enjoy good food, especially Mexican food, Italian food, and barbecue. I am bilingual; I speak English and Spanish.

My philosophy is to teach students to have small successes that lead to greater achievements, self-confidence, and mastery of English. For beginners, I focus on the basics, such as the parts of speech (verb, noun, adjective, etc.) and how they go together to form sentences. Then students learn the basic kinds of English sentences. For vocabulary development, I focus on a list of the most commonly used words in English and teach students how to master their usage. With beginners and more advanced students (who may be in college), I demonstrate online tools to help students learn on their own, such as online language corpuses, and I provide feedback on using English correctly for different situations. For professionals with college degrees, I focus on their particular needs that come up with work-related situations and coach them through those situations, teaching them the right words and phrases to use to be effective, which draws on my own experience in Fortune 500 companies as a technical communicator. A typical lesson would involve a discussion with the student about challenges they are facing (vocabulary, grammar, word usage, etc.) and how to work through those using online tools available to them. It's more focused on "needs of the moment" than on formal lessons, though I have 4 years of PowerPoint lessons to use with students if that's what students want.
