About Audrey

I am a passionate instructor with experience in rich and detailed instruction to middle and high-school students. At Mathnasium-a math tutoring center- I helped foster a positive environment by adapting to students' individual learning needs to enhance student understanding. I have strong organizational and time management skills, and a love of teaching children as much as possible!

Although my previous experience was in teaching mathematics, I am currently studying English and have a much greater knowledge of the subject. My love of both reading and writing, combined with my previous tutoring experience makes me an excellent and qualified instructor.

About the lesson

Typically, my approach as a tutor depends strongly on the needs of my students. During the school year, students may need more support with class assignments, rather than direct instruction on new topics, while over the summer they instead learn new things. When teaching over the summer, I divide lessons into three main topics: Reading, Writing, and Grammar. For reading, I focus on ensuring that the student has strong reading comprehension and that they can successfully analyze the success of various texts. For writing, I teach academic writing (essays that they might write for school), creative writing, and career-related writing (resumes, emails, etc.). The category of grammar includes all the nitty-gritty annoying things about writing: spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, and test-prep. In my lessons I rotate between these three subjects to ensure students have a good grasp on all of them.

My approach is usually to give the student an example of what they're going to learn, such as an example of the essay they will have to write, then, after they write their own, I give them feedback. I do this using both direct instruction (directly saying this didn't work and here's why) and the Socratic method (asking do you think this was effective?)
