About Brendan

Trained historian, experienced educator, and TEFL-certified English instructor, I have lived and studied abroad, taught English from high school to C-Suite levels, published on the history of international business and cultural exchange programs, developed and taught many courses on US and global history, supervised scores of research projects, advised and mentored hundreds of students, served as a board member for a non-profit organization, and worked in documentary film making. I have traveled to many countries, studied and taught across several disciplines, and collected way too many books over the years. I am passionate about the intellectual growth of my students and the expansion of international education and cross-cultural exchange. I’m also a wine enthusiast who speaks Spanish and who would love to return to Spain some day.

About the lesson

I approach all classes as a co-adventure, a shared journey between teacher and student. We all learn best by engaging with new material with open curiosity and a sense of discovery. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to unleash that curiosity by allowing the learning process to take on a life of its own, to be as fun and interesting as possible. For more introductory English classes, I follow the basic structure of Presentation, Practice, Production, and Review of materials for each class. But for more advanced tutorials and specialized classes, my lessons are more conversational in style and structured according to the specific needs and goals of each student. I take a similar approach for all my classes in history. No matter the topic: we review the goals of each class at the start, then go over the material during class, and then review what we covered before moving on to the next class. We move at the pace of each student and in accord with the primary goals of each student and each class.
