About Natalie
Hello, I'm Natalie! I'm an alumna of Boston University with a B.S. in Education & Human Development, specializing in Teaching & Learning with a focus on Global Citizenship and Education, and a minor in English. I have experience in traditional (classrooms) and non-traditional academic settings (tutoring centers, libraries, etc.), and have been tutoring for 5+ years. I love literature and connecting with people through it. I’m excited to work with you to help you improve your reading comprehension and writing skills, meet your personal and/or academic goals, become more confident in your abilities, and enhance your relationship with literature.

Who are these lessons for?
- Anyone looking to improve their reading comprehension and/or writing skills for school, the SAT ELA section, AP Language/Literature Composition, college admissions essays, or for fun! I have experience tutoring students from grades K-12, with an increased focus on middle school, high school, and college students. I teach strategies for reading comprehension, test taking, and essay writing that will improve not only students’ abilities and scores, but also their confidence.
Why should you consider my services?
- I have a B.S. degree in Education and Human Development, so I understand that every learner is different and am knowledgeable in education theories and strategies that help me accommodate my instruction to students’ strengths, areas for growth, learning preferences, interests, and goals. I don’t just offer my expertise in English, but I also get to know the student and try to personalize/tailor materials and instruction where I can. I understand that students are more engaged (and learn better) when they can relate to or are interested in the material.
What is my teaching method/what are my teaching techniques?
- Diagnostics & Getting to Know You: Lesson 1 is always focused on identifying and assessing the students’ strengths and areas for growth (alongside learning needs and abilities, interests, and goals). I ask about what the student is learning in school, take a look at the English class’s syllabus (if applicable), and engage in self-reflection with the student by asking them what they’ve noticed they succeed in and what they find most challenging. We do an activity to practice reading comprehension and/or writing.
- Scaffolding: I break down lessons and ideas into smaller, manageable parts. This helps me make sure I’m addressing everything in the lesson in a way that helps the student understand what, how, and why.
- Interactive Learning & Practice: Sessions are a blend of discussion and guided and independent exercises (reading & writing). This is meant to be an engaging experience where the student and I can think critically together and learn from each other.
- Constructive Feedback: Every exercise is followed up with detailed and constructive feedback. Feedback includes questions, guidance on next steps, praise, and strategies or points of focus moving forward.
How are the lessons structured?
- Warm-up and/or review from previous session.
- Lesson on new material (i.e., reading comprehension strategies, components of an essay, types of SAT ELA questions, thesis development, revision processes, etc.)
- Guided practice: I walk through at least one example, practicing strategies where applicable, sharing my approach/train-of-thought as I go, and encouraging students to participate and share their own ideas/interpretations/approaches.
- Independent practice: the student works on examples either with me or independently (ex., homework for next session). I am there to answer any questions that arise or troubleshoot any issues/uncertainties/challenges with the material.
- Review & Feedback: The student and I review together, and I encourage the student to engage in self-reflection and analyze their work and/or progress. I provide feedback & recommendations for next steps.
