About Thato

I am a college student from Pretoria with a deep passion for logical problem-solving and structured thinking. Mathematics has always been my favourite subject because it relies on clear rules rather than random memorisation. While I was not a straight-A student, working hard to master maths concepts myself gave me a unique, practical understanding of where learners get stuck and how to guide them through it.

My interest in teaching comes directly from my classmates and my own school experience. Back in high school, my peers constantly relied on me to break down tough concepts, and we held group study calls where I would explain the work in simple terms. I was also deeply inspired by my own physics teacher, whose high energy and passion made me love learning. I want to bring that exact same enthusiasm to my students, helping them conquer their maths anxiety, build confidence, and realise that maths is just a logical game they can win.

About the lesson

Target Levels & Approach
I offer highly interactive online maths lessons strictly for learners in Grades 4 to 9. My methodology focuses entirely on breaking down problems into logical steps rather than forcing students to memorise formulae. Because my own brain works through structure, I teach students how to find the pattern behind the numbers. Also, because I was not a straight-A student, I understand the struggle of Maths and the effort it takes to succeed. This provides me with a unique perspective and flexible ways to explain a single problem.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like
We start every 60-minute session by reviewing the specific maths homework or topics the student struggled with at school that day. Next, I guide them through similar problems step-by-step. I do not just give answers away; I keep the energy high and ask questions to make sure the student actively understands the logic before we finish. We will look at the examination guidelines and teach based on that, as well as information received from the teacher in school if it is a recurring session. I am also open to discussing once-off sessions for a specific topic.

Language & Logistics
All lessons are conducted online via Zoom or Google Meet. I teach and explain concepts in straightforward, conversational English, and I am also able to teach in Setswana. This keeps the explanations clear, simple, and free of confusing academic jargon, making the session comfortable.
