About John
I have a BA Hons degree, an LTCL diploma and a grade 8 distinction. I have taught musical performance for many years in schools and university as well as privately. I greatly enjoy teaching enthusiastic beginners of any age as well as teaching advanced pupils some of whom have gone on to top music colleges and universities as well as performing careers in orchestras, folk and popular music.

I have written a series of tutor books which give a structure to my teaching from beginners up through the lower grades. Placing great importance on good technique and musicianship is very important, but it is also important that lessons and the music played are stimulating and fun. As an example, a fine Irish jig or hornpipe, or a jazz standard can sometimes teach just as a lengthy study
