About Renee

I have a Master's degree in TESOL and have been teaching ESL listening/speaking/writing/reading for more than 6 years. I have taught large classes and tutored students one-on-one. I have also taught business research and psychology courses, giving me a total of more than 25 teaching experience!

About the lesson

In my attempt to learn a second language I saw firsthand how difficult it is, especially at an adult age.
This has shown me it is essential to not only include lessons for my English students, but also
opportunities for social interaction to strengthen their speaking and listening skills. When I teach English
I include exercises to build communicative competence, like games and role-playing. I also encourage
practice outside of class, such as interaction with friends and practice websites. Additionally, I share the
fears I experienced when learning another language to decrease the anxiety of my students.
I believe in applying the principles of classroom language pedagogy to teach both oral and written
English. For example, I connect reading and writing because reading can raise awareness of the purpose
for writing, different text structures and potential bias. When teaching oral English, I include basic
segmental level instruction and scaffold to the suprasegmental level. I use a variety of activities
including both receptive and productive skills to reinforce learning, and exercises are scaffolded from
focused to communicative tasks to move students gradually toward stronger understanding. Depending
on the students’ level, writing lessons progress from the word level to sentences, paragraphs, and
essays. To aid students in developing writing skills, I also incorporate reading activities so they can see a
variety of writing functions and discourse types.
Additionally, since grammatical and phonological errors are often related to ones’ primary language, I
try to predict errors by researching typical difficulties exhibited by speakers of different languages. To be
a good model for my students I continue to study the articulation patterns used in teaching
pronunciation so I remember them naturally when a student has a specific problem. I also discuss with
my students their common English grammar and pronunciation difficulties and build a repertoire of
common errors exhibited to keep in mind when teaching in the future.
