About Zdenko

I have 36 year experience in teaching ESL to various groups of students, from elementary and high school students, adults to university students. I have been teaching students both in person (in classroom) and online. My extensive experience ensures that my students receive high-quality information and knowledge, which will help them achieve their academic and personal goals whether they decide to study in their own country or in a foreign country. I always give my best to every student, and I expect that students come to me motivated to do something in their lives and become "somebody someday".

I prefer teaching academic (college/university) students although I teach high school and adult students. I mostly use two methods: communicative language approach and task-based learning methods. These methods emphasize students’ independence, individuality and ability to communicate in both, real-life and academic (college/university) contexts by doing real-world and problem-solving assignments. Learning language through finding solutions or completing other projects is achieved through individual research, pair work or teamwork. Since students take the lead in an activity, their motivation is much higher than when they simply follow instructions or answer the teacher’s questions.
An example of an activity could be an essay on types of pollution. First, the students receive information about the structure and organization of essay from the instructor. Lessons on summarizing and paraphrasing may also be included. This is followed by a brainstorming session in which student(s) provide as many ideas related to the pollution as possible regardless of their spelling and grammar correctness, and even their relation to the topic. In the next step, the students, with some help from the instructor, select only those ideas that are related to the topic and organize them into groups (usually three) according to their similarity; they provide a title to each group and organize the ideas within each group according to their importance. Once they create a basic outline, they create a working thesis for their essay, and then do the research collaboratively or individually and find more information for their essay. After that, they can organize ideas and create an introduction and a conclusion for their essay. Once, they complete the first draft, the teacher will review their assignments and provide information and comments on sections that need to be edited and revised, and they write their good draft, which is then marked.
My students’ success is extremely important to me because their success is my success too. Being an immigrant myself, I know how important it is to find one’s place in a new society and how important it is to be able to communicate clearly so that one can increase his/her chances to find employment and have a career and happy life. For that reason, I provide my students with knowledge that can help them both, in their academic career and everyday life.
