About Erin

Like many careers, mine was to become a diplomat, and I studied the requisite subjects like political science, history, foreign language, English language, economics, politics, world affairs, and so on. My specialty was actually in international security, and was also trained as an analyst. I began taking great interest in developing my personal and professional communications skills because it was an opportunity to not only make myself more effective in my work, but to also help others in my profession- and on an even more macro level- help solve big problems through better strategic messaging and relationship-building. I also have a background in conflict resolution and negotiations and have worked in this area. Due to the credibility I developed amongst both my peers and leadership, I was consistently asked to speak formally and informally as an official of the US Government. For about a decade I served as both a "subject matter expert" and a public affairs specialist - deputized and empowered to speak to the press and public audiences on record usually regarding issues of high visibility, consequence, sensitivity, and import. This is somewhat unusual in my profession. I started coaching because colleagues from my government, and even diplomats from other governments valued my skills and commitment to helping them become more effective. And while I was a US Government official I continued to coach on the side as well as offer workshops to groups outside of government. I am no longer in government and have dedicated myself to raising my child to become an incredible self-possessed and empowered communicator, and am incredibly gratified to support others in unlocking their potential by tapping into the communications arts. Sometimes the transformations have been incredible, and I have seen amazing results! Every human being has to communicate -and represent one's own interests and needs. I can help you advocate for yourself and others - whether you're on the PTA, or at the United Nations. The fundamentals are all the same. I hope to work with you to develop a unique development plan to help you achieve your goals by empowering your communications and yourself!

About the lesson

I work with each individual to assess their individual needs and goals, developing a strategy and plan that includes regular one-on-one sessions, assignments, individualized resources for self-directed learning. Each plan is reviewed with the student and certain milestones and outcomes are established. I draw on a range of materials I have personally developed and used by hundreds of students and professionals and incorporate best practices from my professional training as a public affairs specialist and spokesperson with the US Department of State, where I spent almost 15 years communicating with a range of audiences as well as teaching, mentoring, and coaching other professionals. I helped to establish an award-winning Toastmaster's organization (public speaking group), at the State Department Headquarters in Washington, DC, including a mentoring program. I have worked with individuals from all backgrounds, cultures, and professions- from beginner to seasoned professionals. I have experience working with non-native speakers of English, and using public-speaking alongside a range of other communications tools and skills to achieve maximum performance and results. I also work with people on related skills as well as honing their overall professional presence to bolster credibility and visibility, which leads to increased promotion potential, sales, support (monetary and nonmonetary), to establish one's leadership in one's field. I can also provide specialized training including media training and working in specific conditions or in certain situations and conduct simulations and practice, providing constructive feedback and continual growth. I look at "public speaking" broadly to define one's oral speaking repertoire - whether it be formal or informal. This can include pitches, regular conversational interactions, networking, and even teaching. The goal is to leverage each individual's strengths and authenticity to become compelling and engaging, and grow one's professional relationships and audience. I also have a full skillset in written communications and social media, and can help integrate these tools to complement one's individual needs and goals.
