About Iain
I graduated in the early 1980s with an MA Hons in History of Art from Edinburgh University and immediately joined Christie’s, the international fine art auctioneers, as a picture expert. I worked for Christie’s in London and Scotland, focusing on Victorian and Scottish pictures, before being appointed Head of Modern British Pictures at Christie’s South Kensington. In 1990 I joined The Independent newspaper as Deputy Art Critic and left in 1997 to become the award-winning Art Critic of Scotland on Sunday in Edinburgh, a position I occupied until 2009. As a journalist I wrote one or more reviews every week, over 20 years, covering everything from Renaissance art to the Venice Biennale and Young British Artists. I also interviewed numerous living artists, from Ellsworth Kelly and Eduardo Paolozzi to Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. From 2001 to 2011, I was also Editor of the magazine of the National Trust for Scotland. Since leaving journalism I have become a full-time writer and lecturer, also taking art tours to Italy and Paris. I was also, for several years, Head of Old Master Pictures at Scottish auction house Lyon & Turnbull, for whom I am still a Consultant. I am the author of numerous published books, including monographs on Corot, Sisley, William MacTaggart and Arthur Melville, a noted work on Post Impressionism and books on interior design and museums. I was also the curator of three major exhibitions for the National Galleries of Scotland on MacTaggart, Scottish Country Houses and Post-War Art in Scotland.

I can offer one hour tutorials in Art History from GCSE to postgraduate level, drawing on 40 years of experience. I am able to adapt my teaching to my students and to focus on their specific needs. I can also offer a general outline of Art History from the Renaissance to the 1990s, approaching the subject from chronological, thematic, biographical and geographical perspectives. I also have coached students preparing for Oxbridge exams and I am happy to advise on careers in the auction world, art journalism and curating.
