About Isabelle

I am an experienced ESL teacher who has recently relocated back to Toronto after earning a degree in Human Sciences from Osaka University in Japan. For three years, I taught English to students ages 2-18 in a private English language school. I have experience with both small classes and private lessons.

About the lesson

My methods for teaching have proven effective for increasing student comprehension and expression, both conversationally and in reading/writing. Lessons are taught completely in English to help students get used to hearing the language, as well as to get them used to common phrases (particularly at beginner levels). Lesson materials are tailored to the students' age (toddler to adult) and ability level (complete beginner to advanced).

Beginner lessons cover the basics such as phonics, important/common vocabulary, and basic grammar. These lessons also try to get students comfortable with English at a conversational level. In-class activities/homework will depend on student age.

Intermediate lessons build on the students' already existing skills, with particular focus on conversational abilities. In my experience, the most difficult hurdle for learning new languages is actually trying to put sentences together. Again, lessons are designed to make students more comfortable with expressing themselves in English both in writing and orally. Older students will also be encouraged to think more critically (rather than just repeating my words or from a textbook).

Advanced lessons fine-tune the students' English abilities, focusing on whatever the student most needs help with. This could include reading comprehension, writing and grammar, or oral skills. Lessons will be tailored to the students' needs.

I am comfortable with teaching students of all ages and abilities. I have taught many kinds of students and all have shown dramatic improvement not only in ability but also in enthusiasm for learning English. Every student is important to me and I want all my students to have fun in my classes. Learning a new language shouldn't be painful!

No travel fees within Toronto (or areas close to TTC). Travel fees may be applicable for locations outside of TTC areas.

Cancellations more than 24 hours before the scheduled lesson will not incur any fees. Cancellations within the 24 hour period, up to 3 hours before the scheduled lesson, will incur a fee equal to 50% of the lesson fee (may be waived based on extenuating circumstances). Cancellations within 3 hours of the lesson and no-shows (student more than 15 minutes late without previous contact) will incur a fee equal to 100% of the lesson fee (may be waived based on extenuating circumstances).
