About Susan

At my first Spell to Write and Read training class, I was overwhelmed and mesmerized, but most of all baffled and angry that this foundational information was never taught to me. In fact, I was one of those who did not struggle as much as others with the whole language approach, but, oddly, I was given access to SRA phonics cards, which I read to learn phonics completely on my own while many of my classmates sat silently in their desks struggling with their reading lessons, forbidden from phonics enrichment due to their lack of phonics instruction. Crazy!

As a parent, I used this with my own children. They thrived and become avid readers in a short time. Later, I returned to the classroom to teach high school English and theater. years. After school, I started tutoring young students struggling with reading using Spalding and Spell to Write and Read. This led me to ask to be moved to a position at the school where I could help struggling readers. My principal moved me to a Reading Interventionist role. After two years learning to assess and apply the Spalding method to the interventionist role, I left the classroom to start tutoring struggling readers online full time. That was in 2019, and it has been the best experience I could have imagined. I really love what I do and nothing could be better than serving struggling readers and developing them into avid readers. Furthermore, some have continued with me to grow into strong writers as well and are achieving academic success in every subject.

Here are three recommendations.

When we first started looking for a reading tutor, our daughter Olivia was in Kindergarten and beginning to struggle. Reading and writing weren't clicking for her the way we'd hoped, and we could tell her confidence was starting to dip. We wanted someone who could meet her where she was and rebuild that foundation, and Susan Franklin turned out to be exactly the right person. The progress has been remarkable. Susan focused on phonograms and sounding out words, and over time we watched Olivia go from struggling to actually reading short stories on her own.

The change wasn't just something we noticed at home - by the end of the school year, Olivia's Kindergarten teacher told us she was one of the best-performing readers in her class, reading better than most of the other students. That's a complete turnaround from where she started, and Susan deserves so much of the credit.

The lessons themselves are wonderfully smooth. Susan works with Olivia over Zoom, and I'll admit we wondered at first whether a young child would stay engaged over video - but Olivia took to it immediately and has never once been uncomfortable or distracted. Susan has a gift for explaining things in a way that's clear and patient, and she keeps the sessions encouraging so that learning never feels like a chore. For a prospective family, I'd describe the experience as structured but warm: she knows exactly what she's doing, and your child feels supported the whole way through.

Beyond the academic gains, what's meant the most to us is what the tutoring has done for Olivia's confidence. She's proud of her reading now, and that joy carries over into how she approaches new challenges .We recommend Susan without hesitation. If your child is struggling with reading or writing, or you just want to give them a strong start, you'll be in excellent hands. We're so grateful we found her.
