About Ivy

I am an English teacher with 9 years of experience and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing alongside a CELTA qualification. I have taught over 400 students with backgrounds ranging from absolute beginner immigrants to published authors seeking to improve their academic writing for an international readership. My dual background in creative writing and language teaching means my students receive instruction that takes both linguistic accuracy and expressive quality seriously — I am the only teacher many of them have had who cares equally about whether a piece of writing is grammatically correct and whether it is genuinely interesting to read. I have lived and taught in three countries, which has given me a nuanced understanding of how different cultural backgrounds shape the way people approach English and what specific support each community of learners needs.

About the lesson

I have built my English teaching practice around the idea that language thrives when it serves real human purposes, and my lessons are designed to make every student feel that the English they are developing actually matters to their life. My creative writing strand uses mentor texts — published short stories, essays, and poems — as launchpads rather than models to copy, freeing students to develop voice and style while understanding professional craft. Grammar is taught inductively: I show students patterns in real texts and ask them to articulate the rule themselves, which produces far deeper understanding than deductive grammar drilling. Vocabulary instruction in my lessons goes beyond definition learning — I teach collocation, register, and connotation so students understand not just what words mean but when and why to use them. Students working on IELTS writing receive a structured nine-week writing development programme that I have designed specifically around the most common score-limiting mistakes at each band level. Speaking work uses a technique I call scaffolded spontaneity — I give students structures and frameworks that allow them to produce fluent-sounding speech without needing to plan every word, which builds confidence far faster than scripted performance practice. For business English students I audit the specific communication tasks they face at work — email types, meeting contexts, presentation formats — and build lessons directly around those real scenarios. Every student receives a language portfolio that grows across our sessions, capturing vocabulary, writing samples, and self-assessment notes. I assign genuinely interesting reading between sessions rather than textbook passages because engagement with authentic language is irreplaceable. My ambition is for every student to use English as a means of genuine self-expression.
