About Mina

My name is Mina Gerges, and I am a passionate and experienced mathematics educator with over 11 years of teaching experience across K–12 public, private, and charter schools. Currently, I serve as a professional Math Instructor at Johnson C. Smith University, where I teach with a focus on fostering deep understanding, critical thinking, and a love for mathematics. I began my teaching journey in 2016 as a Middle School Math and STEM teacher and later transitioned to high school, teaching courses including Math 3, Math 4, Precalculus, and Calculus I. My teaching is rooted in a student-centered approach that values hands-on learning, instructional technology, and differentiated instruction. I believe in making math meaningful and engaging, often incorporating instructional gaming and interactive strategies to spark student interest and achievement. Academically, I hold a Master of Arts in Education in Instructional Technology and am currently pursuing an MAED in Mathematics Education at East Carolina University, with expected completion in 2026. I also hold a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Systems Technology and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology with a concentration in Power and Energy from UNC Charlotte. Beyond teaching, I bring a diverse background in instructional design, IT support, and process engineering. I’ve worked closely with students, faculty, and professional teams to develop training programs, support technology integration, and build inclusive learning environments. My mission as an educator is to inspire confidence, encourage curiosity, and equip students with the skills they need to excel both in the classroom and in life.

About the lesson

As a dedicated and experienced math educator, my teaching strategy centers on creating an inclusive, engaging, and rigorous learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students. I integrate a variety of instructional methods—including direct instruction, inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and instructional gaming—to ensure that mathematical concepts are accessible, relevant, and meaningful to every learner.

I believe in the power of differentiated instruction. By assessing students' individual strengths, learning styles, and prior knowledge, I tailor my lessons to provide targeted support and challenge where needed. Whether through small-group instruction, one-on-one tutoring, scaffolded tasks, or enrichment activities, I aim to meet students where they are and guide them toward academic growth and confidence in mathematics.

Technology plays a key role in my classroom. I utilize digital tools and educational platforms to enhance instruction, reinforce concepts, and provide immediate feedback. I also design and implement interactive math games that bring abstract ideas to life and promote student engagement. My background in instructional design and educational technology allows me to curate and create high-quality digital resources that align with learning objectives and support a blended learning environment.

Classroom management is rooted in mutual respect, clear expectations, and a positive, structured atmosphere. I foster a culture of collaboration, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning, work together to solve problems, and reflect on their progress. By building strong relationships and maintaining open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues, I create a supportive community focused on academic and personal growth.

Assessment in my classroom is ongoing and multifaceted. I use formative and summative assessments, performance tasks, self-assessments, and data analysis to monitor progress and inform instruction. I provide timely, constructive feedback that helps students understand their mistakes, celebrate their successes, and set goals for improvement.

Ultimately, my teaching strategy is grounded in the belief that every student can learn and succeed in mathematics. My mission is to inspire curiosity, build resilience, and empower students with the skills and confidence they need to solve problems, think critically, and excel in their academic journey.
