About Michael

I have been tutoring maths for around eight years. The first couple of these were spent helping students with their GCSEs in the UK, before I moved to Italy to teach maths in international schools, where I have continued to tutor – mostly focusing on the IGCSE and International Baccalaureate. There are a few reasons why I tutor maths. One is my love of the subject. I enjoy discussing maths and seeing both my students’, and my own, understanding deepen as a result. I am under no doubt that teaching is a great way to learn. Another reason is that it allows me to stay in touch with teaching and to continue to develop myself. This is especially important considering I will be studying for a master’s in mathematical sciences over the next year instead of teaching in a classroom every day. My approach to tutoring is quite simple: students need to understand what they do and do not understand. Until this takes place, very little progress can be made. This requires some assessment (both by the tutor and the tutee) and a way of keeping a record (usually some sort of shared document that both parties can edit as and when they need to). With some targets established, examples, discussions and practice can take place in order to target the areas of weakness. During these activities it is key to note that I like to focus on first building some procedural competence before then developing a deeper understanding of the topics. It is key to note that I do not use tutoring time to complete homework with students. Students will get the most out of their time with me if they attempt work beforehand and arrive with questions relating to their doubts.
