About Sacha

When I was studying in Classes Préparatoires in France, an intensive two-year undergraduate-level programme in mathematics and physics preparing students for the competitive entrance exams to the Grandes Écoles, we had weekly oral mathematics examinations called “colles”.

Every week, I would spend an hour at the board solving problems while a teacher questioned my reasoning, pointed out mistakes and pushed me when something wasn’t quite clear. Colles have a reputation for being stressful, and a lot of students disliked them, but I always found them incredibly useful. I could really feel myself making progress during that hour, and it often felt like one hour of a colle saved me five hours of trying to figure everything out on my own.

A few years later, I came back to Classes Préparatoires as an oral mathematics examiner myself. That experience is also a big part of why I enjoy tutoring: I like how much progress can be made in a short amount of time when someone is there to spot exactly where the difficulty is, ask the right question and explain things in a way that matches the student’s way of thinking.

That is what I try to bring to my own lessons now.

About the lesson

I adapt each lesson to the student’s needs, whether that means explaining a difficult concept, working through exercises, preparing for an assessment or exam, or improving problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

I usually start by identifying exactly where the difficulty is, then explain the idea in different ways until it clicks. From there, we work through targeted problems so the student can apply the method independently and understand why it works rather than just memorising a procedure.

I have over 350 hours of teaching experience across secondary and undergraduate levels, including one-to-one and small-group tutoring and university-level oral mathematics examinations.

Online lessons are taught using a graphics tablet so I can write and work through problems live with the student. In-person lessons are also available in Melbourne.
