About Karen

Why is tutoring a special part of my professional journey? I've been in the classroom, I've been in the hospital with students, but the virtual environment provides an optimum environment for one to one meetings. The dialog in the tutoring sessions is focused on the student's concerns and provides me the opportunity to provide individualized feedback..
I completed my Master's degree in critical care nursing, however, the focus of my Ph.D. program was nursing education. My personal continuing education includes a program certificate from Harvard Graduate School of Education related to online learning, multiple programs for NGN preparation with nationally known nurse leaders, and programs related to information literacy and individual health literacy.
Most recently in the classroom, I have been responsible for fundamentals, medical surgical nursing, capstone project construction, and nursing resesarch. As a nurse tutor, I have been resposnsible for the review of the entire curriculum.

About the lesson

My first visit with a student allows me to explore the student's assessment of their learning needs. Then it becomes my job to consider the best study plan for going forward. Once the study plan is in place, the typical meeting would start with a review of the previous session and a discussion of the link to the new material being started in the new session. We might use a video, the whiteboard, or an anatomical image for discussion depending on the plan for the day. The meeting would conclude with a recap of the information and a discussion of any homework and possibly an "exit ticket". The student would receive a synopsis of the session.
I have been a nurse educator for several years and I have enjoyed every minute in the classroom and the clinical sites. However, being a tutor is very special to me. I can help students master that single concept that is holding them back, or develop a study plan for NCLEX success. I can provide tutoring assistance for all undergrad and ABSN nursing students for all nursing courses.
