About Robin

I have recently completed my twentieth year as a full-time English teacher and currently teach at a grammar school. I teach students from KS3 through to A-level, including GCSE English Language and Literature and A-level English Literature.
I have an Honours degree in English from UWE, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a current Enhanced DBS certificate. Over twenty years in the classroom, I have taught students across a wide range of abilities and have extensive experience of preparing students for public examinations.
My tuition draws directly on that classroom experience. I aim to provide a supportive and friendly environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing their ideas. I want students not simply to improve individual pieces of work, but to develop the skills, confidence and independence that will help them succeed in English and beyond the classroom.

About the lesson

I am an experienced, practising English teacher, currently teaching GCSE English Language and Literature and A-level English Literature at a grammar school. I have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), an Honours degree in English from UWE and an Enhanced DBS certificate.
My one-to-one tuition begins by identifying the individual student's needs. I use a mixture of past examination materials, classic literature and non-fiction to explore the skills and demands of English examinations. Sessions last one hour and include a variety of focused tasks and activities designed to complement school learning and develop the skills needed for examination success.
I also set regular homework because purposeful practice is one of the most effective ways to improve in English. Typically, the first twenty minutes of the following session are spent reviewing this work: highlighting what has been successful, correcting misconceptions and deciding what the student needs to work on next.
I have worked successfully with students across a range of abilities and starting points. In my experience, the students who make the greatest progress are those who are keen to improve, willing to practise independently and receptive to advice and feedback. One-to-one tuition works best as a partnership: I can identify areas for development, model effective approaches and provide individual guidance, but lasting improvement comes when students are willing to put those ideas into practice.
