I have known Darien in several capacities for more than twenty years as a colleague, Artistic collaborator, and friend who shared the podium with this outstanding individual. I am familiar with his experience during a lifetime of artistic transitions, the resulting relevance throughout his life, and his ongoing impact to others and the broader community. He has spent his life sharing his passion for music with others and has contributed to the development of the next generation of artists.
During his decades of teaching, Darien also pursued his own passion for composing and sharing his thoughts through music. His music spanned the spectrum from urban commentary to reflections on our very existence, always with a relatable theme that leaves a listener pondering the essence of both the music and self. I am also aware of Darien’s social awareness. One of the projects that immediately comes to mind was a musical he composed for a LAMP benefit to help the homeless on skid row in Los Angeles. The commitment to this charitable organization that spanned several months on top of meeting all of his obligations to his student program demonstrates a personal commitment to help others in selfless sacrifice for a greater good. This is but one example of the legacy of Darien Martus.
The depth of his work is well known by his many fans and his recordings on Sony have earned Grammy nominations in addition to the numerous other awards earned throughout his life. Perhaps the greatest achievement any artist can attain, is inspiring future performers and artists to continue the legacy and advancement of music and achievement.
I often see and hear, former students of Darien who are now themselves, performing and
composing and who have been impacted by the artistry of this very special man. Despite all of
the accolades that he has received, Darien remains humble and modest. In my considered
opinion, he is truly the epitome of what a musician is and leaves a legacy that is a role model for all others. I give him my highest recommendation.
