About the lesson

Build rapport: find out student interests and areas of concern re: his/her learning process and the subject matter content

a.    Ask pertinent questions to reveal why student struggles with particular subject matter content/context; (deterrents for forward progression)

                                               i.     I.e.: student doesn’t like spelling b/c he/she struggles with specific word/letter combinations, such as “I” before “E,” except after “C”

                                             ii.     Working with words that are compound/complex and difficult to understand or comprehend upon introduction (syntax/word & phrase formation patterns)

                                            iii.     Comprehension of specific literary styles

b.    Reveal student interests, motivators, and strengths:

                                              i.     Unveil student’s enthusiasm for utilizing/progressing/mastering particular skills

                                            ii.     Reveal what the student considers “important” (current/pertinent influences)

c.     Introduce study habits which might capture student attention/interest, motivating student to build confidence for continuing to persevere in areas which currently deplete confidence and diminish enthusiasm towards improving skills which will enhance performance applicable to overall language comprehension/development/mastery

                                              i.     i.e.: give examples of how previous students conquered such “fears,” inevitably leading to lack of interest and decline of motivation, to boost student morale/ confidence, ensuring success the likelihood and of success and onward progression with the proper tools and attention.

1.    using flash cards as a study tool (repetition/practice leads to efficiency and rapid memory recall)

2.    “practice” with friends—make the learning process fun, interesting, compelling (introduce simple games to play [with self and comrades] which inevitably tend to repeat brain patterns/enhance skill development)

d.    Explain the benefits: for instance, justify putting in the extra time/work now, to promote improvement and diminish fear/anxiety once the skill of interest (area of concern/problematic) is mastered

                                              i.     i.e.: once a skillset is acquired/mastered, the subsequent stages/phases/process become easier and eventually develop “naturally,” with practice, such as “training the brain” to recognize common mistakes or easily identify, practice, and successfully execute writing/composition/comprehension process

Recent Event I am fond of:

a.    The Olympics!!!

As a former NCAA dual athlete, I am intrigued to watch the process of Olympic Sports and the development of both individual athletes and teams of camaraderie who work diligently for the opportunity to bring home medallions as representatives of their countries/cultures/heritage
