There are 4 main qualities that define my classroom:
Personal Connection to the Content: I bring enthusiasm and excitement to my practice. I try to incorporate joy and laughter in my classroom whenever possible.
Stimulating Teaching Materials: Working with students with disabilities throughout my career, I know how important it is to give students multiple avenues to access content. To this end I incorporate multiple forms of media into my lessons including visuals, art, films, music, political cartoons, and maps.
Student-Centered Learning: Though lecture is at times a necessary method for some secondary and post-secondary classrooms, I always try to create learning activities where students are active participants in constructing their own understandings. To make this work, it is necessary to have a deep knowledge of my students strengths and weaknesses.
Including Multiple Perspectives in the Teaching of History: No discussion of history is complete without including a focus on the hidden voices of history including people of color, women, and the LGBTQ+ community.
