About Matt

As a professional musician and perpetual student of music, I can give you the tools to teach yourself. My hope is that in lessons with me you will become inspired and empowered to pursue music as deeply as you desire to. I've taught privately and in multiple schools in Austin TX. I studied jazz guitar performance at the University of North Texas. I have played guitar in a multitude of groups since 2000, some of which have a continually growing catalogue of work on various platforms (you can hear much of my work as a composer and guitarist with the bands McMeta and Progger on Spotify and Youtube). I am also a professional transcriber (I transcribe for Multitracks.com and I freelance), so I can train your ears to hear music in a way that will keep you learning long past our time studying together. If you're ready to find the joy in music and guitar performance, then we will have an enjoyable journey together.

My true specialty is helping the passionate student go deeper. I'm a firm believer in the idea that true joy lies in geeking a particular field of study. I can help you find the patience, inspiration, and motivation to take your guitar playing to any level you want to achieve.

I started my teaching career at Northwest School of Music. I taught guitarists of any age and skill level.

I studied jazz guitar performance at the University of North Texas. I've been a professional guitarist in Austin Texas for 13 years. I've taught guitar lessons at Northwest School of Music, St. Stephens Episcopal School, and privately.

About the lesson

We spend a good portion of the first lesson talking and getting to know each other. I want to find out where you're at in your musical journey. From there, we will work on taking you to the level you want to achieve, making sure to hit all the steps it will take along the way to get you there.

I've taught students of every age and skill level. I've had beginning guitarists as young as 10 years old, professional guitarists who perform for a living, and all sorts in between.

Be willing to take criticism, it will only make you better. Be willing to put time and patience into your art. Most importantly, have fun. Guitar/music can literally be endlessly rewarding when you leave your ego behind and open your mind to the puzzle of the fretboard.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What would you like to be able to do? Write songs? Play covers? Improvise? Play technically challenging music? Learn songs by ear on your own? Understand music theory?

Are you willing to learn things you weren't necessarily seeking? The more knowledge you are willing to take on, the more longevity your musical path will have.
