About Manuel

Guitarist | Composer| Berklee graduate

1000+ hours of teaching experience

I have always been something of a mathematician at heart, and I believe in teaching students to apply that sort of methodical critical thinking to all aspects of music. I believe that music education should be goal-oriented, but that there are certain aspects of music that are fundamental whether the student wants to play funk, modern extreme metal, or to write the next atonal masterpiece. To this end, I always meet my students where they are and focus on where they want to go, addressing these fundamentals in a way that will be engaging for all.

I encourage students to delve into theory and technique deeply enough that they shift from being sets of rules to being a framework and a tool that can be used (and abused) as needed, and I seek to help my students build the mental and physical roadmaps that they need to achieve this goal.

I also teach lessons specifically designed to help students build confidence and understanding on extended range guitars.

Berklee Graduate

- Summa Cum Laude

About the lesson

My first step is to determine what the student wants to achieve and to figure out a plan to get there while still touching on the things I consider important.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Understand that teachers cannot read minds. Find a way to express your needs as clearly as possible, and don't be afraid to speak out if you feel that you are not being understood or your needs are not being met.

Manuel Barbara is a great teacher! He explains theory concepts thoroughly and is very organized. In addition, he is very patient and will help you figure out the answer on your own. At Berklee College of Music, he has helped me pass the CBX test out of Tonal Harmony 2. I highly recommend him for theory tutor help!

He is very knowledgeable and ready to help with any questions and difficulties I have while learning. He always patiently re-words anything I’m confused about, and gives good demonstrations and provides helpful materials to practice with. With Manuel’s teaching style, you see the bigger picture of music and how everything you’re learning relates to it. This keeps the lessons interesting and enriching. 10 out of 10 learning experience.
