About Glenn

Welcome to our acting studio! I've been teaching our system of acting since 2007 here in New York City. We call this system the 12-Step Method because students learn 12 core exercises, along with scene study work to acquire a fully functioning "method" to become a trained actor. Our system is a combination of sense memory exercises, along with exercises in a detailed analysis of character and text. The first group comes out of the work of Lee Strasberg and the second comes out of Stella Adler's work. We also do some improv exercises based on the work of Viola Spolin so the actor strengthens their skills in impulse and spontaneity.

Before becoming a teacher I studied acting in NYC for ten years with people like Terry Schreiber, Alice Spivak, Sandy Dennis and Marcia Hauffrecht. I have a BA in Theater Studies and an MA in Dramatic Theory and Criticism from Hunter College, where I also taught in their Theater Department.

What I like about being an acting teacher is helping students reconnect with their inner child, their emotions and their own best selves. I also like to help people achieve their dreams.

I assisted in one of Terry Schreiber's classes for a while back in the 90's and then later around 2003 I started coaching as a side thing. Then around 2005 I started doing workshops in various sensory stuff, really just experimenting with what I liked and didn't like about the Method. Finally, around 2007 I finally committed to doing a regular class and things have expanded from there.

I have a Master's Degree in Dramatic Theory and Criticism from Hunter College in NYC, where I also worked as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Theater Department. As an actor I was fortunate enough to study with a number of well known teachers like Burgess Meredith, Sandy Dennis and William Hickey, all of whom won numerous awards for their work, including the Academy Award. Beyond that, I spent two years studying with Marcia Hauffrecht with a concentration in animal work, along with Alice Spivak, who had studied in Moscow with Stanislavsky himself. My last two years working with the Method was with Terri Schreiber, who trained many of the big stars that are working today. All said, my studio training took up about ten years of my life and it was well spent.

We do three things in the first class. One, we start with basic relaxation, which is identifying in the body, where it comes from and how to address it. Second, we learn how to release tension with a technique developed by Strasberg, which we call "the sound". Thirdly, we start to learn about sensory work, the five senses and how method actors use it to fuel their craft. Simply put, we learn to create objects, places and people using the senses and what we call "sense memory". The first work in sense memory is creating a "sensory object". I ask the student to bring in an object that has significance for them, something relating to childhood and that's what we work with on day one.

I've worked with a number of students from England, Ireland, France, Germany, Viet Nam, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the US, all over really. As to age, well, it varies. I've had students as young as 18 and as old as 65, it really depends on the needs of the students and where they are in their training.

I would ask specific questions about the teacher's process, what exactly the training consists of and what do they mean by "a method". This terms gets thrown around a lot in recent years and if you've never done that kind of work, it can be a little bit vague. So ask about the specifics of the class and the exercises.

Last year I had a student who had a very complicated relationship with her parents, who had both died suddenly in a car accident some years earlier and many things were left unresolved for her. She had done the Song and Dance exercise in class, which is a challenging one but had really skirted around that relationship(s) and I felt she was cheating herself in that but I didn't press the issue at the time. Later we talked about it and she decided to go back and take another swing at it in class. So she was literally singing a love song to her dead parents, first the father and then the mother, individually. And here's the thing, the actor had previously told me that she had real problems expressing sorrow and that she hadn't cried in years. She felt sadness but had never been able to express fully out. Well, when she included her parents in the exercise it was a totally different thing entirely and it really broke something open wide in her emotionally. And she cried quite a bit that day but she also got to move an enormous piece of blocked energy and feelings, so in the end it was a very good thing for her to do. After that, she was quite different, in that she was more confident, she was more free and she seemed so much lighter, her energy was much cleaner. But those things take courage and clarity of purpose, so I was very proud of what she did that day.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You should ask yourself honestly what you're looking for in a class and what you hope to gain? If you're just curious and want to know more that's fine but if you're looking for real training to take your work to another level, that's something else too.

As to pricing, the standard monthly tuition for my class is $200, which is on the cheaper end of todays market. I usually let new students come in for a trial class for $50, so they can see if it's a good fit for them. If it is a fit, then that gets applied to the monthly cost and we take it from there.
