About Liam

I actually started tutoring back when I was in college. The thing I didn't realize going into it, was as I learned about how to become a tutor, I actually learned a whole lot... about my own learning! I realized the way I was learning could be improved, as I wasn't critically questioning what I was learning about enough. I realized that in order to break down a subject, problem, or concept for someone I am helping, that I needed to be able to explain something step-by-step, something that I couldn't always do prior. Through the Socratic method of questioning, we can sift through problems and concepts together to enrich our understanding and help us solidify our understanding of the material we are working through.

Helping people is nice - and I love to learn! Honestly, we still learn things even as we teach others. Tutoring was a really rewarding job for me, because when you see someone have a breakthrough on something they were stuck on, you feel and share that succcess.

I tutored to make money in college, and I even worked a couple hours my senior year in a pilot program that enlisted students who performed well in the university's general physics course to come back and assist students with the cours.

I tutored college students for two years while I was in college in a variety of subjects, from algebra, to chemistry, to psychology. I underwent training for that job, and got some good practice working with a variety of students. I also center my work around the Socratic teaching method, which uses collaborative questions to help the student(s) reach the answers to their problems.

In order to work with a student, you need to understand where they are coming from - their strengths and weaknesses, learning style, and their base knowledge of a subject. You can't what a student knows until you engage them with questions to learn about their subject knowledge. Once you establish a baseline, and develop a rapport with them, then you can start to help them by tackling simpler concepts/problems and build them up to be able to handle more complex work.

I have mostly worked with college students - however, I did spend a period of time tutoring middle school students as well, so I have experience both with college age students and middle school youth.

Before you do anything, make sure you like the person you hire! Like anything in life, you should work with people you are comfortable with. Not every tutor and student are a good fit, but that's OKAY.

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

The more you are aware of what you're struggling in and why, the better equipped the tutor can be to help you. It's okay to admit something is boring - we've all been there.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-What am I struggling in?

-Why might I be struggling? (do I have a hard time reading? is it time management? is the subject boring?)

-What do I want in my tutor? What do I expect?

I am willing to be flexible based on the age range of the student and the complexity of the subject.
