About Stephen

I'm very passionate about science education and helping students learn. I think I'm very patient and understanding and I think my demeanor goes a long way to building rapport with students. I once waited 2 hours afterschool so a student could come back and review for a test after their soccer practice.

I absolutely love teaching not as a process of telling people things they should know, but as a process of guiding students to find the best within them. Science is such an important cornerstone of our modern world and whether you want a job in it or not, I think physics teaches skills that are valuable in any field.

While pursuing a degree in Astronomy I was tutoring at a local church on the weekends and one of the kids told me I was a good tutor and I took that to heart and decided to combine my passion for science with that of working with kids.

I have 10 years of experience teaching high school math and science in CT public schools including all levels of physics, physical science, algebra, geometry and astronomy. I have many hours individually tutoring students in physics, science and math. I have a BA in astronomy and a MA in Secondary Education.

About the lesson

Find out what the student's expectations are for tutoring, what they hope to accomplish, and what their current knowledge base is in that subject.

I've worked with students of all ages. I taught high school courses from freshman to seniors, but also spent time running the math team for the middle school and doing science outreach for elementary school kids.

Talk to them and make sure you are comfortable with who you are working with. I can't believe the negative tone some teachers take while working with students. Anyone working with you should be patient and encouraging and ultimately be in it to help you succeed. If you don't feel like they are 100% committed to your success find someone who is.

I advised the science national honor society at school which is a service-oriented organization seeking to bring science to the community. The students organized our annual astronomy night which brings kids in from the town for a chance to learn about the sky and view with our telescopes.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think through what you want the outcome to be. Often students ask for help without any sort of game plan on what they need and how they plan on working to get it.
