About Madeline

I have tutored math during high school, specifically in algebra. During high school, I was in an accelerated STEM program and have taken classes in geometry, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. So I have a good understanding of these subjects. I also have experience helping a large class of college students in biology class as well as providing one-on-one tutoring with them. In college, I have taken various biology classes, general and organic chemistry, physics, and different psychology courses.

Part of my training in helping students was to make them active and independent learners, and I try to use different teaching styles to accomodate each student. My style of teaching is not just repeating the information back at the students. I like to ask them what content they specifically need help with. When trying to explain, I like to make it as concise as possible so that students don't get confused. I believe that the most effective way students can understand the material would be by doing practice questions, so I will go over questions with them.

As a future medical student, I enjoy the challenge of trying to remember and explain information to people. I also enjoy getting to understand how different each student is in learning and understanding material. It makes me happy when students finally have that "click" when they struggled with the content.

I graduated from Wayne State University with Honors in B.S. Biology as well as minors in Health Psychology and Ethics in 2020.

I have been a Supplemental Instructor for Cell Biology during college, where I created lessons for content students may struggle with and used different ways to reinforce the material (e.g., quizzes, group students together for practice test questions, draw diagrams, teach the material to each other). I have also done tutoring for the same class where I was one-on-one with them and helped them understand any material they struggled to master. Part of my training was not to restate the material back to the student; one of the goals was to make the student an active and independent learner, and this is done by showing them resources and redirecting questions where the student can try to answer their question themselves. I was also trained to accommodate every student's learning style for the most effective learning.

About the lesson

During our first study session, we will:

- Set a long-term goal you would like to achieve as well as short-term goals for what you'd like to accomplish during this session

- Establish your favorite ways to learn (e.g., visual, audio, hands-on, reading, teaching it to another person)

During each session, we will:

- Set goals you'd like to accomplish at this session (like what weakness you'd like to master today)

- Review what you learned from the previous lesson (like a few questions)

- Go over homework/tests/quizzes

- Study for tests together, especially on the subjects you want to master

- I will try not to answer all your questions but instead redirect you to different resources so that you can become an independent learner!

- Have you teach the material back to me! Yes it might be uncomfortable to do, but it allows you to achieve mastery in the subject.

There is no shame in asking questions, as it lets me know that you are trying to get a better understanding of the material. Feel free to ask away!
