About Carter

Are you struggling and need help in a core science class at the high school or college level? I can most certainly be of assistance. You may find the applicable course list for tutoring below along with my bio at the bottom.

BIOLOGY: General Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, [medical] Genetics, Biological Chemistry, Pathogenic Bacteriology, Neurology/Neuroscience, Patho-/physiology, [advanced] Human Anatomy, Evolution & Evolutionary Mechanisms, Developmental Biology, Psychopharmacology

CHEMISTRY: Introductory Chemistry (high-school equivalent), General Chemistry I (AP equivalent) + General Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry I + Organic Chemistry II, Biochemistry

PHYSICS: Physics I+II, Newtonian dynamics, Thermo, Statics, Lenses/Mirrors, Intro. Nuclear

MATH: Algebra, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, Logarithms, Statistics (z-score, significance tests, ANOVA, regression, etc.)

Biography:

In 2020, I graduated from Ohio University with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. Come August, I'll be graduating from Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine with a Master of Science in Biomedical Science. My current graduate GPA stands at 3.89 and is subject to increase as I close out this last semester. I'm also currently in the process of applying to medical school which gives me a year of free time, thus why I'm tutoring. Each of the courses above and the respective material has been repeatedly etched into my brain.

During undergrad, I helped friends or peers in classes they struggled with and was told I could describe things effectively. So I guess thats how?

-Bachelor of Science in Biological Science

-Master of Science in Biomedical Science

-Research thesis on limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD)

About the lesson

Introductory sessions are extremely helpful for me as a tutor because it allows me to assess what type of learner a student is (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). This evaluation is extremely beneficial to any student as they could be learning wrong! Additionally, I can introduce them to various study strategies that can help optimize student ROI. Study smarter, not longer.

I've worked with students at the high-school level for courses such as AP Biology and AP Chemistry. Additionally, I've worked with students at the college level for introductory bio/chem/phys courses.

Two things:

1) As I mentioned before, everyone's learning style is different, and so are teaching styles. So, if you dont feel like things clicked with a tutor/teacher the first time, they probably wont during subsequent sessions.

2) I really hate to be picky about age, but I've personally found that STEM material is easier to learn when the person teaching is younger. Again, nothing personal, but theres probably some kind of correlation between shyness or attentive listening and age.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-Never ask a teacher/professor directly for an answer, it'll probably just irritate them. Instead, ask them to guide you through a problem if you truly have no clue where to start.

-Always ask how many questions are on a test/exam and how much time you are allowed. You'd be suprised how much faster 75 seconds/question feels compared to 90 seconds/question.

-During a live lesson in class, if a teacher goes over something super complex or something with a lot of detail, ask them how they memorized it. They could have some kind of mnemonic or "house-map" approach that can simplify things.

-If you ever truly feel unprepared for a quiz/test/exam, ask your teacher if they'll allow you to take it at a later date. Emphasize that you just need one extra day to study and the material was just starting to click. More than likely they'll be sympathetic, but dont overuse this.
