About Jack

I’m a Biology PhD student with an MRes in Biomedical Sciences and a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology. After my Master’s, I trained as a secondary school science teacher through Teach First and enjoyed classroom teaching, but I also wanted to further develop my skills and knowledge as a scientist. I returned to university to pursue a PhD, which allows me to deepen my expertise while continuing to tutor. Alongside my research, I am a lab demonstrator and tutor at my university, enabling me to combine my passion for science and education. I enjoy breaking down complex scientific ideas into clear, manageable steps, helping students gain confidence in their abilities and develop the skills they need to succeed in exams and beyond. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy running, hiking, and amateur dramatics.

About the lesson

Before beginning regular tutoring, I’m always happy to meet with each student to understand their current attainment and confidence in the subject, and what they aim to achieve. I am able to tailor lessons to different exam board specifications and any available class materials, focusing on the student’s individual goals and existing knowledge. Lessons are structured yet flexible, with a focus on building confidence, closing knowledge gaps, and improving exam technique at a pace that suits the student. I offer tutoring in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics up to GCSE level, as well as Biology at A-Level and university level. Alongside my PhD research in Biology, I bring experience as a former secondary school science teacher and university-level tutor. I hold a recent enhanced DBS certificate, ensuring a safe and trustworthy learning environment. Most recently, I’ve provided 1-to-1 tutoring to A-Level students through my university’s Senior Academy and Pathway Opportunity Programme, supporting those preparing for careers in medicine, healthcare, and general science. My tutoring rates are competitive and reflect the additional preparation that goes into each hour of tutoring. I’m committed to providing quality, personalised tutoring. For GCSE science, I charge £25 per hour. For A-Level Biology, my rate is £35 per hour. For university-level Biology, I charge £40 per hour. I’m happy to discuss tailored packages or group sessions, which may be more cost-effective, if that would be helpful.
