About Josh

When you study with me you can have full confidence that I am invested in the success of your learning experience. After each lesson you will be given a personalized take-home assignment that systematically addresses both your musical goals and the areas in which you need the most improvement. I have experience teaching a multitude of styles including; funk, classical/baroque, jazz, pop and more. Most importantly I have an in-depth understanding of technique and the unique ways that each student learns. I will teach you how to practice and grow both in our lessons and outside of them.

I have years of experience teaching both adults and young children and have been teaching professionally for 15 years and have been playing electric bass for 22 years. I have two University level degrees (Bachelors in Music from Humber College and a Masters in Music Composition from York University) and I am a published author of music instruction and transcription books ('Tapping Grooves: Vol.1' and 'Josh Cohen - Freedom Solo Bass Transcriptions').

I began teaching music in 2006 during my final year of high school and have kept it going ever since. I briefly spent 3 years from 2016-2019 performing and touring instead of teaching.

I travel frequently throughout North America to perform and teach clinics/workshops including; Bass Boot Camp 2016 and 2019, Gruv Gear’s Clinic Series at Steve’s Music Toronto, Bass Break Live 2017 and others.

Several years of ongoing private studies with Garry Dial who designed the theory curriculum for the Manhattan School of Music.

About the lesson

In our first lesson we will together establish your goals, interests and areas that need improvement. Afterwards each lesson will address those goals and will come with a personalized take-home assignment that often includes a PDF, recording on your part and written work. I care deeply about my students' progress and work diligently to help them meet their goals.

I have worked with students of all ages from 5 years to 80 year olds. I have had and continue to have students who are hobbyists, university music students, and professional full-time musicians.

It is important that my students trust my expertise and know that I truly care about their progress and supporting their interest in music. However, I also encourage them to ask questions and challenge me at times. Be prepared to work hard, but also to have fun and never give up the magic feeling of music.

You are welcome to come to me with a plan of what you are looking for, many professional musicians who I have taught often do. However, if you don't have a plan that is fine, we can work together to solidify a direction for your studies that meets your goals and interests.
