About Nina

Hi everyone! I'm currently a master's student at Johns Hopkins. I love to teach and I would love to help you out in your classes!

I was a Supplemental Instructor (SI) for 8 semesters as an undergrad, teaching the first fundamental biology class. I have also mentored and tutored students one-on-one for more than 11 semesters in biology, chemistry, and math.

I have retaught fundamental biology at the college level for several years.

Genetics was my focus as an undergrad and continues to be my focus in grad school.

My undergraduate degree is in Microbiology.

I was a mentor for biology as an undergrad and then applied to be an individual tutor. After a semester I was recommended to be a Supplemental Instructor (SI) and I stayed in that position for 8 semesters.

About the lesson

I like to get to know what the student feels like they are struggling with and then I will ask them some questions to find out how much background they have relating to the topic. Sometimes students aren't struggling with the material, but more so with how to approach the material and sometimes students need a little reinforcement of the basics. Whatever the case, I can help students to pinpoint the location where they need help and we can go from there!

I'm very patient with students and want to help them learn and help to resolve any issues that may be holding back their learning.

As an undergrad, I worked with college freshmen.

I have worked with students of all ages through clubs and community service activities.

Find someone with who you can interact comfortably. Someone who doesn't intimidate you or make you feel bad for not knowing or understanding the material. After a tutoring session, think about if the tutor was able to convey the information in a way that makes sense to you. "The best tutor" may not be the best tutor for you. Students should find someone who explains the material in a way that makes sense to them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should spend a little time thinking about what questions they would like to ask during the session. It is always a good study practice to spend time trying to write your own exam questions. This helps students to think about the material and to think about what they might be asked on the exam.

However, sometimes students are just overwhelmed with the material and they don't know what they don't know. This is very frustrating for students and they often don't want to reach out for help in these cases, but with me, it is ok to come to the session without knowing exactly what you need help with. We will figure that out together.
