About Cienna-paige

As a young middle-school student, I struggled tremendously in math mathematics, so much so, that by 7th grade, I didn't understand how to add fractions. Being so far behind my peers, my mother decided to hire a math tutor. This decision was by far one of the best choices for my academic career. I began to excel beyond my peers in algebra, often learning subjects before my teacher began the topic. Now, rather than becoming overwhelmed by a math problem, I am able to break it down into its solvable components. Having a tutor for this short time helped me so much so, that I am now able to teach myself much about math. Finally, having a tutor showed me that I learn best when given personalized attention, as do many students.

Because I understand how impactful a personal tutor can be in a child's life, want to help students receive the help that they need by extending my knowledge to students as a tutor. In helping students excel academically, I am willing to assist in a multitude of ways, whether that means simply helping students comprehend homework for a subject, or helping the student understand that subject in itself.

As a neuroscience major at Berea College, I have skillfulness in an array of fields. Given the interdisciplinary nature of my major, I have taken courses in biology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, and neuroscience, earning an A-average in each of these courses. Furthermore, as a high school student, I gained exposure to the field of medicine, taking college-level courses in medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology, eventually earning my Nursing Aide certification.

Through my off-campus experiences, I have built on my classroom knowledge within the field of STEM. Specifically, during the summer of 2019, I participated in the Neurological Surgery Summer Student Program at the University of Washington and as part of this program, I researched the function of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Glioblastoma at Seattle Children's Research Insitute. This summer, I will be traveling to the University of Pennsylvania to work with animal models of neuropsychiatric illness, research similar to that which I hope to complete in my profession.
