About Alexandra

Hey y'all! My name is Alex, and I would love to be your new biology tutor. It would fulfill some of my deepest career dreams if I could have a positive influence on your learning experience. I am committed to understanding your goals and learning your strengths and inhibitions so that we can focus up and work together on feeling good about learning difficult subjects like biology.

I recently graduated from Appalachian State University (August 2022) with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology, concentrating in Ecology, Evolution, and Environment and minoring in Sustainable Development. I earned a 3.86 GPA, but I had actually maintained a 3.94 GPA until my final semester when senioritis kicked in and I earned my first and only ever B+'s.

I have always had a passion for helping others learn. I have been practicing tutoring, formally and informally, since high school when I obtained 60 tutoring hours for my senior project. I helped fellow students with varying levels of biology, chemistry, physics, math, and writing. I then graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA.

I carried my passion for learning and sharing knowledge with me throughout college. I informally helped numerous classmates and friends pass our biology, chemistry, and calculus courses. Then, my sophomore year (fall 2019), I got a job as a University Tutor at the Student Learning Center, where I primarily helped students with biology and calculus. I earned tutor of the month in October 2019 for showcasing exemplary patience and a positive attitude when working with students.

My favorite part of tutoring is the learning that I also get to do. I get to learn how so many unique brains work as we are both faced with puzzles that we work as a team to piece together. I learn how to think about problems from multiple different perspectives, and then I get to practice fine tuning my language and explanations to fit the students' needs. Oftentimes, it may take a few tries explaining something before a student truly understands. But that "aha!" moment, when I finally figure out how best to communicate with a student, is not only rewarding to the student effectively learning the subject, but also to me effectively learning the student.

Additionally, I love getting to relieve the stress that confusing subjects can cause a student. I get to watch them become lighter and less stressed as they finally understand something that has been confusing them.

Finally, I get to talk about cool subjects, like DNA, cells, and photosynthesis! I truly enjoyed being a student because I got to learn about the most intruiging topic there is: the study of life! This knowledge is something I want to carry with me forever, and it lives on in me through the tutoring of students.

About the lesson

Biology lessons offered by Alexandra are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in Boone. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
