About MacKenzie
My students and peers tell me that they are able to learn from me because I'm relatable. How? I am currently a senior in college. I have excelled in my classes and am able to help students understand subjects from the simple elementary/middle school building block concepts to the advanced high school/college level instruction. I can not only help students understand a subject they are struggling in, but I able to offer additional knowledge about study strategies and habits, testing skills, memory techniques, student-teacher communication skills, and much more.
I enjoy being able to help students succeed and achieve their goals no matter what educational level they are at. I understand the pressures students feel and am able to help them tackle mental road blocks and emotional stresses. I also understand what a privilege it is to be able to go to college and I like to share what I have learned during my 5 years of college, and my years of prior education, with students of all ages. I have tutored students from elementary school age to people who have decided to go back to college later in their life to change or advance their career.
I started tutoring my peers in elementary and middle school. My teachers knew that I was a good student that excelled in my classes, so they talked to my parents and I about working with my peers who had special educational needs. I loved tutoring from the start and have been tutoring my peers ever since. I even tutor my fellow college students when the school-provided tutors are unable to help them in a way they understand.
I'm a senior in college with a 4.0 gpa, so I understand how to communicate information in many ways to students of all ages. I started college classes at age 16, was invited into Phi Theta Kappa (a college organization for students with an exceptionally high gpa and are at the top of their class) by age 17, and earned an Associate of Science degree by age 18. Before I changed my major, I was even accepted into the nursing program at KSU, one of the top 10 nursing schools in Georgia, the very first time I applied. I am a dedicated and diligent student and am nothing less as a tutor.

I request very specific information before I commit to a new student. I need to know what education level the student is learning at, the specific topic that they need help with and any specific details they can give me about the trouble they are having. For example, if the student is needing help with college algebra, I would need more details than just "I need help with college algebra". In order for me to plan a lesson I need them to tell me about the specific concepts they would like to go over and how may sessions per week they are requesting. Also, I need to see the type of examples and explanations that are being given to the student in their classroom or learning environment. I need to know how their teachers and textbooks explain the topic so I how to explain it in a different way or so I can create alternative examples. I also need them to explain what they are looking for in a tutor. Does the student just simply need help with understanding certain concepts or are they looking for additional advice on study habits, etc? I love when my students ask me these types of questions! I am not a professional tutor nor do I work in education, so all of this information allows me to refresh my own memory and understanding before the lesson(s). Also, this gives me time to plan out the different techniques and examples that I need to use during the lesson.
If I am familiar with the topics the student needs help with and feel confident that I can give them the help they need, then I will come up with a general lesson plan and price point.
I am a very patient tutor and have worked with all types of students, each with their own needs. Some had varying levels of autism, dyslexia, neuroligical disorders, delequency problems, anger management issues. One mother specifically requested my help because her son refused to listen in class due to his problem with authority figures and it worked because he saw me as a helpful peer/friend instead of an intimidating authority figure. Some of my students were older adults who decided to go back to college and needed all forms of help understanding the material and even some of the technological knowledge that school now requires. Sometimes problems in the classroom stem from problems at home and my students have needed someone relatable that they can depend on every week or even once a month.
I met up with a little girl and her mother at my local library and we did a bit of unconventional tutoring. By that I mean that a very close friend of mine went with me and allowed me to use his dog, that he trained for therapy work, during the tutoring session, with permission from the parent of course. This little girl's mother did not know how to help her young daughter progress in her reading skills. The girl and her mother met me in a quiet study room that I rented and I brought the therapy dog with me while my friend read a book outside for a little while. I assisted the girl with her pronunciation and focus and made the lesson fun and engaged the dog. The therapy dog was to help the girl feel less shy and embarassed about reading. I told the little girl that the dog came here specifically to help her read, which made her very happy. I told the girl that if she tries her best and if her mother says it's ok, that at the end of the lesson she could give him treats and we could walk him around in the library and she could even hold the leash all by herself. By the end of the lesson, the girl read her book to the dog and made only a few little mistakes along the way. So she happily gave the dog all the treats she could and we all followed as she walked him around the library, proudly telling everyone she saw about how a dog taught her how to read.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What am I specifically having trouble with? Where or at what step do I get lost? Do I understand some parts but not others? Do I need advice on ways to study or memorization techniques or test taking skills? What are some learning methods that I already use? Am I looking for help or am I looking for a tutor that will give me all my homework answers?
