About Luke
I am currently a fourth-year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville looking for part-time jobs tutoring science subjects. I have a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and graduated magna cum laude from the Honors College at the College of Charleston.
I have experience tutoring various science courses at the undergraduate and medical school level. Some of the subjects I am most comfortable tutoring include Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, and introductory Chemistry. I am able to tutor basic sciences at the elementary, middle and high school levels as well.
I have a passion for teaching and mentorship and have held numerous peer mentor and academic coaching positions through the College of Charleston, University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and the nonprofit organization Prescribe It Forward.
I am passionate about meeting students where they are and empowering them to take ownership of their education and tap into their strengths. There is nothing better than helping someone reach their full potential and realize they are more than capable of reaching their goals!
As a college student looking for part-time work, I quickly discovered that I enjoyed teaching my peers subjects that I personally was passionate about. I found it extremely rewarding to witness their academic progress and watch their confidence grow as we worked together to develop their skills. I continued to pursue further tutoring and mentoring roles to give back to hard-working students and help them achieve their academic and career goals as others helped me prepare for medical school. I have enjoyed it so much that I plan to pursue academic medicine as I advance in my medical training.
Tutoring positions:
Fourth grade science during my junior and senior year of high school
College of Charleston Center for Student Learning - Cell and Molecular Biology; Evolution, Form and Function of Organisms; Human Anatomy and Physiology; Principles of Chemistry; Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
Trident Literacy Association - I tutored adults in Math, Reading and Writing in preparation to receive their GED
University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry.
Peer Mentoring positions:
As a Peer Academic Coach at the College of Charleston, I met weekly with students on academic probation to develop study strategies, create assignment calendars, review exams, and identify and implement personal learning styles.
Through the Prescribe It Forward nonprofit organization, I aided with medical school applications, MCAT prep and resume building for medical school.

After working with students at many different levels of education, I have discovered that each student has a unique learning style and pace that must be identified before any progress can be made. I prefer to get to know students by asking questions about the ways they like to learn, reviewing course work they've completed and walking through their study habits with them. As an academic coach, I worked with students to develop personalized study strategies, time management skills, and understanding the difference between passive and active studying. Many students notice drastic improvement in their grades and overall confidence once we discover their individual strengths.
I have worked with students at various academic levels, including elementary, college and medical school. Many of my students were self-motivated, driven and simply struggling to grasp concepts despite their superb work ethic. However, many others lacked motivation to study and often did not believe they could perform well academically. I have enjoyed not only helping students discover what is holding them back, but also helping them unlock their strengths and identify their goals. My favorite part of tutoring/mentoring is meeting students where they are, empowering them to take ownership of their education, and producing work they can be proud of.
An effective tutor will help you discover which learning strategies work for you, instead of trying to make you conform to their teaching style. Most of the students I've worked with were only struggling because they did not know how to study in a way that made sense for them. My advice would be to seek a tutor who is willing to listen to your needs and adapt their teaching strategies accordingly. Your progress and academic success are the most important part of the process!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Consider the ways you find it easiest to learn material. Do you remember information best when listening to a lecture, watching a video, drawing a concept on a whiteboard, reading from a textbook, or teaching the topic to a classmate? The most important step in identifying your difficulties is to understand how you are currently studying and whether that is compatible with your learning style. It may also be helpful to make the following lists for yourself: a list of your goals and what you hope to gain from tutoring, a list of the barriers you feel are preventing you from being successful in your classes, and a list of your strengths.
