About Holly

Hi! I'm Holly! I'm an experienced scientist and teacher, and I'm excited about science and nature. I have expertise in genetics and evolutionary biology, and I've taught these subjects many times in an undergraduate course setting. My goal is to provide a fun and exciting learning environment that is tailored to the student's needs.

During my tenure in graduate school, I received two teaching awards from the Graduate School and from the Department of Genetics. I have also taken two pedagogical courses.

My favorite part of teaching is helping students come to understanding on their own, with a little guidance from me. I have lots of experience with mentoring as well, and seeing my mentees and students progress in their academic careers is incredibly rewarding.

I got started teaching in graduate school, where I taught 2 semesters of undergraduate biology lab, 1 semester of an online introductory biology course, 5 semesters of introductory genetics, and 2 semesters of evolutionary biology.

I have a PhD in Genetics, and during my PhD I have taught 8 semesters of undergraduate biology, genetics, and evolution courses. I have also mentored several undergraduate students in my lab, so I have experience with one-on-one training/tutoring as well as in a classroom setting.

My expertise is in biology and genetics, but I also have a strong general science background and am available to tutor other scientific disciplines as well.

About the lesson

I typically gauge the student's current understanding of the subject and find where their strengths and weaknesses are. I try to tailor my tutoring towards these strengths and weaknesses and find the best way to help the student, on their own terms. I also regularly accept feedback and criticism, as this helps me improve my teaching and tutoring performance. My goal is to help students learn on their own, with a little help and guidance from me.

I have worked mostly with undergraduate students, both who were science majors and those who were not. I have also done outreach at science fairs for middle and high school.

I would suggest you find someone that has the appropriate experience in this field (biology), that you're comfortable working with, and that is excited about the subject and can impart that excitement to you as well.

I recently defended my PhD, which was very exciting, rewarding, and kind of surreal.
