About Jason

Hi! My name is Jason. I'm a Materials Science and Engineering student at Johns Hopkins University with a concentration in Biomaterials and I've been tutoring just about all my life (professionally only for about 4-5 years). I have 3 siblings so I've been tutoring them since they were little and that just turned into a passion for teaching others that were struggling in all kinds of subjects: math, chemistry, english- you name it. I taught math, chemistry, and SAT/ACT test prep in high school and I do much of the same now just with more subjects (organic chemistry, biochemistry, structure of materials).

Here's a little extra on how I like to tutor certain subjects:

Math Tutoring

I've always found math to be a game of fundamentals, and especially with higher level math: a game of confidence. I've aced all the math classes that I teach and I'm sure I can help you do the same. I like to focus on conceptual questions, but I realize that active problem solving is helpful for many people and so I do a lot of guided practice problems. Math is really all about believing enough in yourself and your ability to solve a problem before you even start it. I find that if you if you don't have that self-confidence, you'll be second guessing yourself with every calculation.

Organic Chemistry

Everyone stresses out about organic chemistry but I assure you that organic chemistry-when it really boils down to it- is about molecules being as lazy as they can. I don't like my students to use model kits as I truly believe that is detrimental to the spatial reasoning you need to develop in this class. I like to focus on acid-base chemistry and the concept of HOMO/LUMO as that is the basis for all elementary reactions and synthesis questions. I love both stereochemistry and spectroscopy because stereochemistry is all about being able to rotate tetrahedrals inside your mind and spectroscopy is like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle. I assure you that with the conceptual knowledge I can teach, you will have a firm basis to approach question types you've never ever seen before on tests.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry can be broken down into 4 main topics: proteins, ezymes and their kinetics, metabolism, and the central dogma of molecular biology. I like to teach proteins through the many identification methods we have (chromatography) as each chromatography method gives you different information about a protein and it's structure. For enzymes and their kinetics, I like to cover the thermodynamics of enzyme first (their free energy differences) and then proceed to regulation and kinetics (binding isotherms and Michaelis-Menten). For metabolism, I like to teach all the pathways (carbohydrates and fatty acids especially) separately and then connected so that we can see how all the pathways and cycles are crucial for human life. Finally for the central dogma of molecular biology, I can cover all of transcription and translation and the roles of polymerases, RNA's, and transcription,elongation, and release factors in these processes. Biochemistry truly shows you how the human body is finely tuned to accommodate all these topics in the most efficient way possibly.

English and Essay Writing

I believe that the most important things for persuasive essays is planning the essay with an outline, and then when it finally comes to actually writing the essay, truly not caring about what and how you write. If you do the research necessary for the essay and learn the topic enough while writing your outline you should be able to write the essay with minimal references to that outline. Getting all your ideas and arguments down in the first draft is much more important than writing pretty English with perfect and concise grammar (that can always be taken care of during revision). Essays are best written when you imagine trying to educate or convince your best friend on a topic. When you can achieve the level of comfort you have with your best friend on a computer, you stop worrying about making everything perfect the first time around and get to what your teachers really want: your ideas and personality showing through your writing. I can also teach the logic behind persuasive writing (ethos/pathos/logos) and the methods necessary for a research paper.

Test Prep (SAT/ACT/PSAT/SSAT)

I took the SAT and ACT and the PSAT and SSAT multiple times throughout my middle school and high school years. Specifically I took the SAT 3 times, ACT 3 times, PSAT 2 times, and the SSAT 2 times. These numbers only cover the official tests and don't cover the countless amounts of practice tests and questions I did to study for the tests. What I've learned for the verbal portion of these tests is that critical reading questions can be solved much easier through the implementation of certain strategies and that the english grammar covered can be broken down in 18 set rules. For the math portion of these tests, there are multiple tricks to simplify the solving of the algebra and geometry questions that the SAT and ACT purposely puts in to help the students that know about them. The PSAT and the SSAT are simply easier versions of these two tests and the strategies and information that can be taught for the SAT and the ACT can be used on the PSAT and the SSAT. My SAT score automatically shot up 100 points and my ACT score went up 4 points when I learned these strategies and information and I'd be happy to share them.

Matlab

Matlab is slightly different from other computing languages. I believe it is slightly less intuitive than a language such as java and as such, notation can be manipulated in Matlab to make writing code much more concise when we are dealing with arrays and matrices (data) which is the main purpose of using Matlab. Learning how Matlab creates and handles array and matrices and learning how to index these data logically to manipulate these arrays and matrices to the utmost extent will truly help you to understand the function of Matlab.

There's a few other topics that I teach that I haven't covered here, but I am absolutely confident that I can assist you with any learning troubles you may have whether that be how to approach problem solving or conceptual material or even test taking tips and strategies. My 3 siblings (both older and younger) always needed help with their homework and studying for tests so I developed a passion for teaching them and other people too.

I am a college student at one of the top 10 universities in the USA: Johns Hopkins University. In order to get here I've studied every stubject just about as hard as possible and aced just about all my classes because of the knowledge and problem solving strategies I've accrued over the years. I've been tutoring professionally for around 4-5 years but I've tutored my 3 siblings informally all my life.

About the lesson

I first assess their knowledge on the topic we need to cover and have the student tell me what they think they are struggling with and how they think they learn best. I then create a specifically tailored plan for each student based on the knowledge and proble solving strategies they need to learn and the goals they wish to reach.

I've worked with everyone from lower school (elementary school) students to college students.

Look for someone who you think you can learn from comfortably. Studying is all about being in the right "mood". I could go into the neuroscience behind the beta waves but I'll spare you the trouble. Essentially, make sure you don't hire someone you don't feel comfortable with or have confidence in.

I recently was tutoring a student SAT math and while going over our final diagnostic test, it was clear she knew how to approach the math problems and solve all of them quickly which was a huge improvement from when she could not answer half the questions in the beginning session. This was a culmination of 2 months of consistent hard work on knowledge and test-taking strategies but seeing the difference it made was well worth it.
