About Cameron

I'm here for the students who feel like nobody understands them or the struggles they're having. Having ADHD myself, I've had to come up with all sorts of unconventional habits and solutions to make coursework make sense for me. Throughout that process, I came to learn what did and did not work for me and why. From this, I've come to try every study trick in the book and in what scenario it works for.

There's no better feeling than seeing a concept click for a student of mine. It menas we're both doing something right, and it's feedback in real time telling me what does and doesn't work for this particular student. Each student is an individual and deserves to have someone responsive to their particular style of learning.

I've always been outgoing and charismatic, so I naturally gravitated toward being a leader in (and outside of) my classes. Once I got my start in the Mentor program I started to recognize just how rewarding this type of work is to me. While academics are important to me and the success of any young person, I began to realize that often the biggest roadblock for students is the lack of human connection, sometimes needing someone more akin to a friend than a stern teacher.

I am fresh off of my own academic career! I just graduated with a BS after only 2 years of University and a merit-based full-tuition scholarship. At University, I often lead study sessions with my peers where I learned an abundance about how other students process their schoolwork. In high school, I was one of few selected as a Student Mentor, where I not only tutored but was a general life mentor for students who requested the help. I built a close relationship with my mentees and saw the impact that having someone to listen to them made on their lives.

About the lesson

Ideally we begin with them bringing me an assignment they're comfortable with and we sit and talk through it. I let them lead the way to show me their process without much guidance on my end. From there, we move to something more challenging and I continue to let them do their thing with minimal input. I continue to be as hands-off as possible while I watch their process. From this information I can decide the degree to which I should be intervening in their process, as ideally I should function as an extension of their distinct thought process that works for them.

In my experience with explicitly tutoring, I was assigned students who were deemed "at-risk" by the school for a combination of academic and at-home reasons. That is when I saw how stranded some of these types of students feel, not because of a lack of intelligence on their end, but because they've fallen into the role of "problem child" that no one has the patience for.

I've also implicitly tutored many of my own peers, primarily honors students but also artists just trying to make it through math class. In every single case it came down to the same thing: each student is their own person with their own way of approaching their work, and you must understand that and meet them where they are if you want to see them succeed.
