About Elizabeth

I began tutoring chemsitry, biology, and Spanish at college in 2016. I bring a growth mindset and love of my subjects to my sessions. My philosophy is that students should learn not only the subject matter, but also the tools to be successful. I cultivate the key study tools and habits in my students, guiding them towards independent learning.

B.S. in Biology, Winthrop University

I struggled with math thorughout my time in school. The experience built up my resilience in the long run, though I had to break the habit of avoiding the challenge for fear of failure. I understand what it is like to try over and over and not get anywhere. In college, my eyes were opened to how the human brain really works-intelligence is something you build, and academic success is earned by tenacity and strategy, not merely talent. I started tutoring to help make ends meet, but now I have a passion for guiding students to their potential.

I have a bachelor's degree in biology from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, with two minors; Spanish and secondary Education. During my time at Winthrop, I interned in middle and high schools and worked as a peer tutor in science and Spanish. I was trained to be a level 1 CRLA certified tutor and hired by the Winthrop Academic Success Center, where I honed my skills and discovered a love of teaching and learning. I have approximately 350 hrs experience tutoring chemistry at the freshman level.

About the lesson

I always start with an entrance interview to get to know your needs, timeframe, strengths and weaknesses, and specify key goals. Whether you are looking to raise your grades for a class or master one concept, I help you create a flexible, realistic strategy to acheive your goal. We will work as a team, in order to help your improve your overall learning ability and confidence.

The majority of my experience is with college students, particulary in the first and second year. I also have done private tutoring for high schoolers and middle schoolers in science and Spanish. I have had a diverse client base, with some students with learning disabilities and a few english language learners.

Look for someone who identifies your strengths and your weaknesses, and who guides you to analyze your thinking.

In chemistry, someone who revisits past concepts to help you understand new ones is a keeper.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Identify where you are struggling. Be honest about your frustrations, and look for patterns. Do you psyche yourself out before a test? Are you bored by the subject? Are you a procrastinator? Do you know how to prepare for classes and asessments? Everybody struggles with some part of the learning process. A good teacher challenges you, but also equips you with the mental tools to succeed.
