About Jerry

With 27 years in the community college system, I've learned to adapt my teaching to match the strengths and weaknesses of whoever I'm talking with at the time.

Personally, I like to learn. About everything. Curiosity and interest are key precursors to learning. I can commiserate with students who maybe aren't interested, and therefore struggling to get chemistry make sense and stick. I like to find ways to help information stick, so students can progess. I enjoy being creative and helping students overcome obstacles.

My mom was a teacher, so it runs in the family. My wife and I homeschooled our four children, and I've coached youth soccer off and on for over 20 years. Learning something, then reprocessing it in order to teach it to others, comes naturally to me.

I have a PhD in chemistry. I have taught general chemistry at community College for 27 years and at a high school co-op for about 20 years.

About the lesson

If a student has a specific assignment that they are working on, I prefer them to email it to me ahead of time, so I can look it over off the clock.

If a student is needing general instructions to understand a broader topic, I would give them 1 or 2 small problems to work so that I can observe precisely where the breakdown lies. Then we fix it. It helps if the student emails me their class notes on the topic ahead of time.

I've worked with students who are weak with general math to students with photographic memories. Work ethic and pattern recognition can overcome most deficiencies.

1. A tutor will not be much help until you learn the terminology. Don't overemphasize understanding concepts, but do learn the terminology. For example, many students have trouble understanding stoichiometry, but they can still do the math correctly without understanding it, if you just learn the terminology. The rest is all rather mechanical, very pattern based. For most students UNDERSTANDING stoichiometry lags behind DOING stoichiometry by a couple weeks.

2. Hire a tutor that is accustomed to your class level, not above your class level.
