About Maia

I'm a recent graduate from the University of Wyoming with a B.S. in Zoology with a focus and passion for Ornithology. Due to my highschool coursework in various AP classes and passion for a variety of life science subjects I was able to graduate a semester early.

I have a year of experience tutoring my peers in highschool math and science courses and developed and taught my own 6-week summer course on Ecology in 2022 to students between the ages of 14 -17.

I love to work with others in a 1-on-1 setting and to help students broaden their understanding of science and the world around them. I think that the best way to teach is to listen, and that no one knows how to learn better than each individual student themselves. I do my best to work around each student's comforts and effective learning strategies while still pushing them to succeed. I will ensure that each student learns what they need to know and will retain this information long-term, and even learn how to connect it to their daily lives and perhaps discover a passion.

I love life science and enjoy any opportunity to talk about it and broaden others' understandings of it. There is so much about the world that we do and don't know and oftentimes I learn things from my students just as they learn from me. Teaching work allows me to have conversations with students that we can dive into and investigate regarding topics that are not only helpful to their understanding of the subject, but will greatly improve their interest. Nothing makes me happier than seeing others get excited about topics that I have devoted my life to.

I've always loved to help my peers and younger siblings in subjects they had trouble understanding. Once I had the time between courses I immediately searched for a teaching-related job.

I was a peer tutor in highschool, helped my younger siblings with their homework growing up, and have received training and experience in designing and teaching my own 6-week summer course on Ecology. My B.S. is in Zoology, so I have taken a wide variety of life science courses including but not limited to Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Scientific Communication, and Population Ecology, as well as multiple chemistry courses.

About the lesson

Firstly I like to talk to the student about their current understanding of the subject. This includes a brief conversation about what they know and what confuses them. I then like to talk to them about their preferred learning methods and my own teaching strategies so that we can find a plan that will work best for them. I will then ask to see a course plan or syllabus if they have one so that I can prepare for future tutoring sessions effectively.

Details

I charge $30/hr for 1-on-1 sessions but will discount for larger groups of students:

$20/hr per student for groups of 5-9 students

$15/hr per student for groups greater than 10 students
