About Madeline

I have worked with a variety of students, from beginners to those who just need help making the final connections. I have experience working with those who need concepts completely explained and those who just need a nudge in the right direction. I love helping students build confidence and I like to show them what they already know so they are confident in their abilities to conquer the unknown concepts as well.

I love helping students reach an "ah-hah" moment as some would call it. I know that not being able to understand concepts in the science world can be extremely frustrating, and sometimes you just want to sit down with someone and talk it through. I am so excited to answer questions students might have about science and help them feel more confident in their courses or as they prepare for exams.

I was hired through two separate hiring processes at my university. Both required interview processes where professors or leaders of the Learning Center at my university asked me questions to determine my credibility for the position.

I am about to enter my senior year as an Honors student at Western Kentucky University. I am a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry and have a 3.96 GPA as I enter my senior year.

As far as experience, I am currently a teaching assistant for a chemistry lab at my university. I am also a leader of "Peer Assisted Study Sessions" where I plan 2 weekly study sessions to review material in a General Chemistry course at my university. I have also been a Biology Coach at my school helping students review for the General Biology 1 exams.

I haven't yet worked with students through this website but I have at my university. I typically start with asking students what they are struggling most with, but also what they understand about the material we will work through so I know where I should avoid long explanations. I then like to see examples of the materials their working through (assignments, videos, etc) to see what the instructor or exam expects so I know how to best help them.

I have worked with a variety of students during my time in my two positions at my university. Throughout my time, I have had approximately 50 students who I have helped. Some were very new to chemistry and did not have much confidence in the subject at all, and some just needed help refreshing.

I would say find someone who doesn't feel judgemental and who is open to developing a relationship with the student so the student feels comfortable discussing their needs with the tutor.

One of the students in the Peer Assisted Study Sessions I lead told me that I helped them make connections they hadn't before and that they went from a D on the second exam to an A on the third.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should reflect primarily on if they can not understand the material or if their main need is figuring out the best methods of study for the material.
