About Melanie

Who am I, and where have I been?

1. Teach for America highschool science teacher- Earth Science, Biology, and Physical Science

2. 11 years as a professional chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and as a forensic chemist.

3. 2 years as a graduate teaching assistant for University of Florida in Pharmaceutical Science

3. My education: BS Biology, MS Pharmaceutical Chemistry, MS Medical Microbiology (in progress)

As a teacher, I am compassionate and comprehensive. Thoughtful feedback is my passion. Teaching you how to find the answers for yourself is my goal- so that you won't NEED a tutor anymore! I will help you identify what you know, what you need to know, and give you confidence in your ability to find the answers.

I have real world work experience in the hard sciences, and I know what it takes to get there and be successful. Let me help you get there too!

My first teaching experience was as an Undergraduate Teaching Intern for Indiana University, helping teach human physiology laboratory sessions.

I have 5 years of experience teaching the sciences ranging from human physiology, biology, earth science, physical science, and chemistry. While in college I was a teaching intern for IU medical sciences program, and my first job out of college was with Teach for America. I worked 11 years as a professional scientist, then returned to school to earn a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Science. I am currently working on my second Master's in Medical Microbiology, and have been working part time as a graduate teaching assistant for the past 2 years at the University of Florida.

About the lesson

We will go over the lesson materials you have available, discuss your concerns, and look for solutions together. I will assess your knowledge base with a few questions, and help you identify gaps. Then we will come up with a strategy to help you fill in your knowledge gaps that works best for you.

I have worked with high school students in under-resourced schools, undergraduate students, and adult learners at the master's degree level.

A good teacher is flexible, and can adapt to your learning style. Learning science is sometimes like learning a foreign language, and it often takes more than one way of explaining a concept for it to stick. A good teacher will recognize what works best for you, and will bring you with them approaching a concept from a variety of perspectives.
